Now THAT would really p me off, incredibly rude i feel.

I'm a bit of a ditherer on most things...same goes for this debate...Like most started off in tents..Then moved to a TT which I really loved...Then came UKCS and the local Scottish meets which I attended quite regularly with my family..There we would be 2 1/2 hrs to set up(done it meself as the kids disappear into distance!!)while most of the other attendee's would roll up in their vans and be set up in a third of the time..Sat there with their cuppas watching old jelboy struggle to get set up(only joking..most if not all would lend a hand) Then same again when we broke camp to come home..So..started hankering for a small van..as I could see all the benefits of having one..So duly got myself an old 2 berth van..and heigh ho off we go to a new evolved form of camping..Comfy beds..all cooking/heating/waste disposal/fridge needs all self contained in one unit..corner steadies down..hook up..gas on..and there you go...all set up..Yep really enjoyed my 4-5 times away in the van..but the bit between home and campsite was the problem..the towing..could'nt get used to it..and found it very stressful especially on the wee country roads where most of my campsites seem to be...So van is relegated to its storage facility(in the hope I'll pluck up the courage to tow sometime)and I've gone back to tenting towing a trailer which I have no probs with..This year having no car to tow with..I went and bought all the backpacking gear..and decided public transport would get me where I want to go...But that didn't happen..cos on my only planned trip this year..I decided I needed a few more things with me than the backpacking option would allow..so hired a rental van...Packed all me wee essentials and off I went for a week of realative comfort in my four man tent..Think my perfect set up would be a folding camper (a kind of halfway house between tent and van)But for now..a bit of careful planning re hire of a rental van and my tent should see me alright for next year...
Jelboy.

Crikey, you can say that again!  Reminds me of a neighbour's child (aged 7) who asked me where we were going on holiday and when I said "Cornwall to stay in a caravan", she replied "Oh how horrible! Can't you afford to go on a proper holiday?! We're going to Spain on an aeroplane!"  Funnily enough, I avoided conversation with her after that...

At least she was only seven.  For Speedcamp's caravanners there was no excuse!

We have been tenters for years and I will always love camping but with the kids and all their stuff and all ours too I do find the packing and putting up and taking down a complete chore. (Plus as we don't have a spare bedroom or dry garage to put all the stuff in before we go, my eldest's bedroom looks like a branch of Millets in the preceding weeks!) Back in the day when it was me, hubby, our little Terra Nova (pitch time-5 mins) kettle, gas stove, 2 karrimats and sleeping bags, and hip flask it was great.

We have had a couple of campervans over the last 5 years and now have one again, but last summer we spent our main summer holiday in our North Face family tent (also relatively easy to pitch). The weather was on the whole fairly kind so we could sit out most nights, which was lovely ( we were pitched next to the campervanners and caravanners, who on the whole didn't sit outside at night, but pretty much all the tenters did). However, the weather broke towards the end of the week, the forecast for the last day booked was awful, we were kept awake the last 2 nights by wind and even worse-inconsiderate campers till 3am, and I felt like a zombie due to lack of sleep so we came home a day early. At least in the van it is weather tight and keeps some of the sound out (and in!)

Both campervans and tents have their pluses (though personally never cared for caravans-or even a big MH) but for me campervans are the better option. Having said that, I would love to have a weekend just with OH and our walking boots in the Terra Nova again!

If I were to win the lottery I'd be buying myself a motorhome. I know exactly which one I want too having been to the Motorhome and Caravan show last weekend! Would love a caravan with a good awning on it, I'm sure that would still be quicker to set up than pitching our Vermont XL, but I really don't fancy towing, and whilst hubby says he'd feel happy to tow, he'd need to take another test and I personally think he'd not be as good at towing as he thinks he might.... I do enjoy our tenting hols, but unless it's really warm, we sit indoors at night (especially with having the little one as I like him to wind down for bed...). If we had a motorhome, we'd still want some kind of awning on it and would probably sit out in that rather than in the motorhome itself... although in colder weather we could sit inside and be warmer still! Also our camping season would be extended, neither of us are very good at coping with feeling cold. We wouldn't use the motorhome for driving around on holiday as we tend to go to places that we don't need to use the car even now.... only use the car to do a week's shopping, which we wouldn't need to do with a motorhome as we could actually put shopping in it before leaving home (no room to do that with all of our camping stuff in our car/roofbox!). Would probably put a bike rack on it though and could get about using bikes, which would be a great family activity as well. But, I still wouldn't want to get rid of the tent.... would still like the option of proper camping because as someone else said earlier, I don't really see motorhomes and caravans as 'proper' camping! And for the record, I haven't found most tent campers to be as friendly as everyone seems to like to make out, just as many caravanners or motorhome occupiers have spoken to us as those in tents.

Kathryn

Heck, it's PEOPLE that can be so rude and/or thoughtless. I hate the silly stereotyping of caravanners and/or campers. We've had both, and are the same people whether we use our tents or our caravan! What's more, we've met some great campers in caravans and some great campers in tents, and occasionally some rather thoughtless ones in both units, too.

We've just bought a little caravan so that we can extend our camping season and maybe make things a bit easier on ourselves, for health reasons. The way I see it, my little caravan is like an organised trailer we can sleep in, and we'll basically be living in the awning (I think of it as my new tent!). Best of both worlds, I hope!

I love tents and the whole concept of camping.

If I had more money, I'd be buying a lwb 4x4 (old) Landie and kitting it out with lpg tanks, fold-down bunk bed, cooker and porta-potti compartment and I wouldn't sell my Caranex as that tent would work with the vehicle. Pipe dreams!

We love our BL6 but have been thinking more and more about a caravan. We are getting on a bit, we have the space to store it, the car to pull it etc.etc. Then last week my best Pal who has recently converted from a motor home to a caravan  jack-knifed on the M5 wrecking his car and caravan. Thanfully he, his wife and both dogs were unharmed but ..................... I think we'll stick with the tent thanks very much!

You are as likely to have a crash in a solo car as you are in a car & caravan. There are plenty of other reasons why you might not want to tow a caravan but you are no 'safer' in a solo car than you are in a car/caravan for any given journey, assuming correct loading & good driving within speed limits.

I've yet to see a solo car fishtailing all over the road like the caravan we saw on the M23 on Sunday morning!

Your argument is invalid, you could equally say you have never seen a car & caravan rolling end over end. Both accidents could have been caused by driver error. To say that car/caravan is more unsafe than a solo car is incorrect.

I have just bought a small van and pitched on a permanent site an hour from home. I also have three tents and so can compare the two options.

Camping is a, relatively, cheap quick getaway to new places when the weather is at least half decent. It can be noisy and hard work setting up and taking down but nothing beats the back to basics feeling you get from a tent, can't wait till next year when we can go again.

My caravan is a home from home and i go to escape city life at the weekend. No set up as it's permanently pitched on a quiet coastal site. It has, nearly, all mod cons and is a rather expensive luxury but at my age living in a block of flats can drives me crazy at times(am in my van now and the silence is deafening).

So for me it's horses for courses, I am glad I can choose between the two options according to my mood/time of year/weather forecast!!!
