Should I Shouldn't I

I cant decide if I should take the kids away camping this October 1/2 term, We have no EHU and would be looking at 4 nights away. We dont have winter sleeping bags but we always take our normal ones and duvets just in case. And I have fleece covers for the air beds. I have a small gas heater. And we have termals. I just worried if cold and wet we wont enjoy ourselves.

Help can anyone give me any postives the only one I can think of is we love camping!!

Hi,

You should see the October camping thread for some positives.

I'm no expert having only had my first camp last month but personally wouldn't camp at this time of the year with kids without EHU with an electric heater and 3 seasons sleeping bag.  There's nothing worse than a cold miserable child at night (you can guess what our first night was like) and yes we ended up buying winter sleeping bags the following day despite having thermals and extra blankets.

We too would like to camp at half term but waiting til nearer the time so we can see what the forecast is going to be like before we make a final decision.

If you and the kids love camping them go you will have a great time. Where are you thinking of going? Try to go to a site where you can have a camp fire and don't forget your hot water bottles have fun.

We camped throughout the year when our kids were young without any problem.
The problem with camping out of season was that over protective parents assumed that the kids were cold and did not teach them enjoy themselves with outdoor activities such as hillwalking etc.

Was looking at joining a meet at the orchard at wickham market,  so camp fires allowed, kids will run wild with any others willing.

I go on my own my hubby hates camping and has never been with us. I take an Icarus 500 with enclosed canopy so lots of space 1: to relax in when raining and 2: lots to heat. When I went to new forest mid September it rained and tent  leaked a little where canopy joined tent. I worried about putting it up properly alone kids do help after a fasion. My garden is too small to erect properly to redo seams just in case.

I supppose I just looking for reasurance money is short so cant afford new sleeping bags and go away.

Thanks for your ideas and support

Hiyas i think as long as you have plenty of warm clothes & lots of insulation below your beds & extra bedding  ( hot water bottles a must ) kids should do just fine. We did our first camp in February of this year & survived to tell the tale lol & we are planning on joining the ' Hopleys ' central meet 3rd week in November. If the weather does turn out to be wet then make sure you have plenty for the kids to do games, crafts etc. You wont know until you try it ...all part of the experience. Hope you have a great time.

Madz.

Hi madz meet some of the hopleys crew at a mini meet and then IOW you will  have a great time with them they are very friendly. Wish I could go then aswell but I am working. The mini meet was 1st w/end in april very cold overnight but it was dry and ony 2 nights.

I think I may call the Orchards and find out where I stand ie can i just turn up etc then watch the weather. My daughter wants to take a friend not sure as she has never camped.

I think I am just being silly
