Hi guys I am going camping in a few weeks and I am taking the train and going with my bike. Is there a way that anyone may know of securing it by my tent or it will have to go in the bike hut. Mainly for security, I can't imagine people stealing but just out of wonder what others do. I wanted it by my tent to keep the panniers on as I have a cover.

Ther have been a number of instances of cycles being stolen from sites, I would suggest asking the site whether they have had previous problems.

We use to take the wheels off and put the bikes in the tent.

Hi orrinpj.

I can fully understand your concern, when I cycle camp, from Manchester to Annan in Scotland some 160 miles, it takes me 3 overnight camps to complete, although when I was younger, I could do it with just the one overnight camp. I do the return journey via train from Carlisle to Bolton, so that I can get back home in a day.

My first tent was a LaserLite, and I had to leave the bike out in the open, this never made for a good nights sleep.

Later I upgraded to a Hilleberg Nallo2 GT tent,  which has room for two touring bikes in it's cavernous porch.

OK it does not mean that the bikes are theft proof, but out of sight, out of mind and all that.

Also the bikes are locked together, and attached to the inside of the tent, so if an attempt to steal them was made in the middle of the night, I would sure know about it.

During the day time, I never let the bike out of my sight, this is easiar when there are two cyclists, but if your on your own, this is not always possible. so it's just a case of using the best lock you can get, and keeping those out of sight moments, to an absolute minimum.

Of course a lot of this concern, about your bike being nicked is paranoia, but I don't believe that you can become complacent, no matter what anyone says, there will always be an element of risk.

I would say the bike is more at risk, in the bike hut, than in your tent, if the bike is left outside the tent, then that becomes an even bigger risk.

Keep your bikes locked at all times and take off panniers if leaving unattended.

I have also taken a tarp and hung it over my bike and fastened down with bungee - just to stop the prying eyes. Also keeps the bikes dry if it rains

Mate does cycle camping and last year had bike nicked. (Cost more than his car!) Jokingly, I suggested he borrowed my personal alarm (needed for a job I had long while back). Asked what I meant, demonstrated it to him and advised him to fix the alarm unit under the saddle so if someone nicked bike, they took noise with them when the contact is broken. It was duly borrowed and tried out by other local serious cyclists and several who attend events or bike and camp have now got one.  The idea is that you make obvious measures bike so the tiny wee loop that connects the alarm isn't noticed.

It makes one hell of a noise and, if hidden on the bike or handbag, camera case, whatever, means that the chance thief will abandon the object - you stand a chance of getting it back

Agreed, not nice - indeed scary and b annoying at any time of day or night on a campsite, but why should folks have their stuff nicked?

you can screw  in 2 dog tethers close  together, then attach a chain/lock to both through the loops, no one can unsrew the two at the same time...      or just lock the bike to a ehu post              http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-dog-tether-camping-pegs-p143671
