Try not to re-proof unless you absolutely have to, it's a complete can of worms, once you do it, you have to repeat every year or 2 at least.
Your tent most likely leaked due to being incorrectly pitched, this is the cause of most leaks on brand new tents.
I would highly recommend you purchase a good seam sealer, as this is also where most leaks occur. Get a good quality one & apply to all seams as per instructions (some even apply on inside & out, but this can look a bit rough after). I think once you've done this, you'll end up with a good tent.
Pitch it in the garden and try to make it leak ie soak it. Not only do people pitch incorrectly causing leaks but they also lie to get there money back and if so you shouldn't have to do anything other than be happy you got a bargain
I have one of the 'mycooltent' bell tents and was informed of possible leaks but used it as is with seam sealer to hand. I tucked the 'groundsheet flap' under the tent which others hadn't done as the instructions were unclear what to do with it and we had a few hours of showers, sure the tent did get darker around the seams but nothing leaked so I left it alone.
Check it out thoroughly then. if mould wasn't in the description, see if you can return it.
If you think it's salvageable then by all means keep it.
Musty smells you can get rid of, mud you can get rid of. Mould you cannot.
Keep us posted, maybe a few pics are in order, & if it's going to have to be dried out anyway, you might as well pitch it in the garden (or local piece of grass if you haven't got room at home) to check it's all there & see what state it's in.
Like I said, take a few pics, especially if you're not sure.
You can kill the mould with a dilute milton solution. Most leaks turn out to be condensation anyway so as already said pitch it and soak it with a hose
------------- Experience enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again
Thank you for the advice. Have cleaned the windows and they seem ok now, the tent just smells a bit musty but looks ok. Unable to put up in the garden just now as it floods when we have any rain, so hope it'll keep for the warmer weather.if it doesn't i won it cheap on ebay so not a fortune lost.
Can you stick it up in the loft, or somewhere dry, just to make sure it's all dried out?
Some people even hang their tents from the bannisters for a few days, I managed to spread mine out in the loft, & there it stays until the weather improves & I can get it out to roll it back up.
If you've bought it from alchesmist (sp?) on ebay, and it's not as described, get in touch with them. They were very good when I had a similar issue and sent me another tent.
hi, i did buy it off them on ebay. this was the replacement first one had no bedroom pods or canopy steel poles. Still got the first tent as not sent it back yet. waiting to see if they will refund postage when i send it back . they do have good customer service i'll will say that about them, thought they just send pobs not a complete tent.
