Just back from Glencoe and it certainly didn't feel like January! the temperature never dipped below zero, even at night. Not much in the way of photos this time I am afraid. All in all a bit of an anticlimax. I was going to take the tipi and stove but the high (relatively speaking!) temperatures changed my mind and I used my trusty Outwell Carolina (not sure if it will last another season & I dont think Outwell make it anymore).

I will resurrect my last camp of the year thread to show folks how different the weather was since 4 weeks ago!

This is the same spot at the Red Squirrel (now renamed Jims spot by the staff!) The water filled gully is normally dry so it shows how much water has fallen (instead of the usual snow at this time of year)



I got a short break from the rain which I used to dry out the surface condensation from my bag (Snugpak Elite 5 season). You can just make out the discolouration at the neck of the bag. Unfortunately when the warmer than normal air is saturated with moisture, my body and breath during the night condensed onto the surface making the outside of the bag quite damp. Maybe using one of my canvas tents would have helped prevent this dew point thing happening or even using a 3 season bag! Honest it was not cold!



This next photo has NOT been fiddled with in photoshop. This is the actual colour of the scene! Up north it doesnt get dark quickly, its more of a gradual dusk (and dawn) which we call the "gloaming". It is a spooky sort of light just before darkness sets in properly. the camera was hand held, hence the slight blurring in the low light but I had to take it before the light changed again!



This knotty bit of wood kept me warm!



Finally, am I correct in thinking this is a heron?



Roll on February, maybe get some decent weather!

That site looks really does look amazing - might just plot to ditch the kids and haul my baby Carolina up there at some stage. (and you can still get Carolina Ms which I think are the same as the 3s)

Looks so quiet! Where is 'Jims spot' exactly? Is that to the right hand side of sight.  And did you visit the Clachaig

Jacobite it is off to the right as you go into the site, turn right at the mini roundabout and it is the patch which runs alongside the large gully (which incidentally used to be the original course of the river coe). The other side of that gully is reserved for families.

I am heading up there 13th Feb for a week (beer festival at Clachaig!) so if you are about look me up!

Karen I am very tempted now by the Trout Lake. AAGH must refrain from buying any more tents!

Speedcamp you would not believe the abuse I put my tents through!! I do like the layout of the carolina M but after a couple of extreme weather camps it is showing signs of defeat! I have cycled through the rest of my tents to give it a "breather" in some of the foul weather but I think if and when I replace it, it is going to be something like the trout lake God I love tents!

Ah yes, have a good idea where now. Not sure what date yet for me. My mate has invited up to the Scottish hillwalkers meet in February. Waiting on my other mate, who's in Whiterose, getting back to me to see if they're playing the Clachaig in Feb. Can't wait to get up there. Sure I'll catch you up there at some point if not the 13th!

You certainly see the wildlife when you go to the Red Squirrel!

I have the same sleeping bag and was going to have a go at washing it, but wouldn't like to ruin it. I just wondered if you had any advice?

Funnily enough Sarah I have yet to see a squirrel! - even a grey one!

I haven't washed my bag and it is a few years old now but after every use it gets permanently aired on top of a spare bed until the next time. I get a bit concerned when they say that regular washing can damage the filling and reduce the thermal efficiency so I have never tried it.

RTS it was about +9C this week, last months (I resurrected the thread HERE) to show the difference in the weather! Then it was about -3 to -5C !

Thanks Ian, I enjoy taking photos up that area - always something different to see!. BTW I did a review of the site a while back (last Feb I think). It is the Red Squirrel campsite in Glencoe, Argyle. Happy to do an update on it if you like?
