On the serious side is Hi-Gear stuff a problem as have just Purchased there small gas heater ??? Must Admit I though that Hi-Gear was a brand and not the “Value” range ????

Hi-Gear stuff is GO's own brand stuff and was made by Gelert but it looks like that's ended now. Personally I've never had a problem with any of the Hi-Gear stuff I've bought (including a small gas heater!) but I've never had one of their tents so I couldn't comment on them.

It's worth having the discount card just for the offer leaflets they post to 'members' - they often have offers in them that aren't in their usual leaflets or online.

Go Outdoors can be very good value but only if you know the true value of the stuff and are prepared to wait for it to come on offer. Alternatively if you can find a cheaper alternative elsewhere they'll beat the price by 10%.

Not got a Go near me, but do have a good camping shop. Although over the winter id does change most of its' display to Ski Wear they do still have some tents on display.
Can't wait until I can get away for just a weekend.

The Hi Gear stuff is ok, Ive got some chairs and a cabinet from them. They are the affordable option and they certainly have a place in the market. There are things I dont want to spend a fortune on that Hi gear do cheaply.

As for Go being expensive Ive always found the opposite although there are two things Id say:

1) Shop around for everything, sometimes GO do have items more expensive. ie bought the Nevada M from All Weathers yesterday for £208, Go selling it for £279

2) Keep an eye on their deals and subscribe to their newsletter as they have some excellent one off deals. I bought 2 Hi Gear Kentucky chairs for £12 each on one weekend offer, they go for over £35 normally. also got a down jacket for £79 which was £125 everywhere else.

It was my favourite shop but Im just hoping they dont just sell Hi Gear as that would be a bit limiting for them.

I agree that would be a retrograde step for G.O. We've got our share of Hi Gear kit where the product best addressed the need. But I want to see the equivalents or alternatives from Outwell, Vango, Berghaus etc too so that we can make an informed decision.

Judging by Pudsey yesterday they are re-stocking so it will be interesting to see if they're maintaining a broad offering or a one brand (our brand) deal.

On price, the convenience means that it's not an issue with smaller items. If I need it quick it doesn't matter if I could have got it online a pound or two cheaper.

For big items I'd never buy at their "full" price. You wait for the offers and/or check the competition and deploy the price match option. That's how we got our new tent last year at a price less than used examples were selling on eBay.

With their pricing fluctuations you've got to keep your wits about you.

Hi All,

Its great to see so many comments about tent shopping! Im like a kid in a sweet shop at the moment as I know what we are stocking (just chalking off the days before I can pitch them!!!)

I know I work for GO - but I can vouch for Hi-Gear as a brand (and its certainly not a value brand) Me and my family are big campers. We are lucky enough to own lots of kit across many different suppliers. My garage is full of Hi-Gear, Vango & Outwell camping kit.

I have camped for weeks at a time in all Vango, Outwell & Hi-Gear tents in horrible weather and never have I been let down. I have a young family of two and wouldn't camp in anything that I didn't think was up to the job.

As for my stores display - I`m hoping to have it 100% finished by the end of Feb. I can also confirm that there will be offerings from Outwell & Vango (normally their most popular tents) and of course Hi-Gear.

I`m a huge Outwell fan and have owned a Monty 6, Maryland XL and a Monty Lake - But have also been just as snug, dry & safe in my Rock 5, Kalahari 10 and Voyager 6 tents. The length of the holiday, space available normally dictates what tent we take with us - but as stated earlier I`m happy in either one of them.

I`m normally kicking around on here so I`m happy to offer any help or advice. I have just recently moved back to a store after spending two years in the buying department at GO (buying tents! - Who`d have guessed!) So I`m up to speed on manufacturing/development etc

Anyway - looking forward to seeing some of the Leeds based posters from this forum in my store - if you get chance ask to speak to Dave and I`d be happy to put a face to a `forum user name`

Happy camping

Yes it was Pudsey and tent man told me that Wakefield still have a lot up in the field. I'm holding out for the 2012 ones now seeing as it's not long til February.

There`s only a few smaller tents up in the field there (2 or 3 person and a couple of pop ups) not many on the display just outside the doors either

Hi Mike,

Honestly - i wouldnt mind!

When Pudsey first opened I ran the store in Horbury (Formerly Mitchells Practical Campers) after that I moved to our buying dept for two years and have now come full circle back to the stores again (I have been here since Early October)

I have started today (saturday) pitching a few of the new models from our own labels - its looking like mid Feb before Vango/Outwell tents will be available

Cheers

Dave

Cheers Dave. We know Horbury well. We got our Pathfinder FC there when it was Mitchells. They're blessed with the tent field for displays, but for inside stock we like Pudsey. Nicely laid out and plenty of space

I use both the Horbury and Pudsey stores but I tend to prefer Horbury as they have the tent field :)

Are you at Pudsey now Dave?

Hi Purplebean - I am at Pudsey now............I also love the tent field at our Horbury store - lots of space, think I had 85 models pitched at one point

Cheers
