My biggest problem with cooking inside a tent with a SIG would be carbon monoxide poisoning to be honest... a problem that was all too prevalent in the news last year and which only one person seems to have mentioned on this thread. When we're camping I prefer to cook outside weather permitting because it's all part of the beauty of it for me. But when the weather has been bad, I've cooked inside the porch area of the Vermont with the front door tied open and making sure the cooker is well away from the walls - and also making sure that any rising heat is not too close to any fabric.... so I wouldn't put the cooker near the side wall for instance.... in the Mojave we got a porch and I cooked in there in front of the open door (again tied up out of the way) and in the Oakland I'm planning to do cooking by the doorway if necessary. In all of these tents there is another door that we can use should we need to and we make sure that they are easily accessible. I always disconnect the gas bottle after use as I just don't trust it.... This year now that we have the Oakland, I'm thinking of getting a tarp that I can put up if it's raining so I can cook underneath that to be completely honest.... but if the weather is really that bad then we'll maybe eat out!
Hi Kat67 I could be wrong as I don't want to mislead anybody over something like carbon monoxide poisoning, but I think that was a tent heater that took that life last year. Anyway we would only use gas after everyone was up and dressed and outside tent. And as far as gas heaters for tents go we would never buy something so dangerous. A few years back our granddaughter was given the use of an electric blanket, and I was not happy about it and complained bitterly to her dad who blow me off with " it's only used to warm her bed before she sleeps " And yes I hate being right a few months later we had a phone call and was told Emma had a lucky escape after she had felt cold in the night and switched it back on and it had caught fire. So We would never use anything gas or electric to warm our tent, it's just not worth it.
I think the gas heaters work with the same canisters as the suitcase style stoves don't they? So I'm thinking of it from that perspective.... of course, with proper ventilation it should be ok, but I fear for the people that might be cooking with the tent doors closed, etc. Like you, I'm not sure for definite whether cooking would cause carbon monoxide but I'd rather not take the chance anyway to be fair. One or two of the fatalities were also caused by people taking bbq's into their tent.... a definite no no!!! We use an electric fan heater to keep the living area of the tent warm, but it's always switched off before we go to bed, and we have the ventilation bits open. We just make sure we have plenty of bedding to keep the bedroom and beds warm through the night - much safer!
