I am looking at buying a reasonably large tent - maybe the Outwell Yosemite Falls or Wolf Lake 7.  I am concerned though if I do because of their size (either 4.9m wide x 7.9m long or 5.1m wide x 6.4 m long) that I will be refused entry to some campsites as a standard tent pitch will not be big enough?

Do all campsites have pitches of this size?  What are others experiences - does it mean you must book in advance, are restricted on where and when you can stay etc? 

Any thoughts please send.

It depends on the site owner/management, so it would certainly be a good idea to check in advance, for example the Camping and Caravanning Club would charge more for a tent larger than 5m by 9m, where pitches for these are available.

Other points to consider are the size and weight of the packed tent, and facilities (following packing away wet) for drying at home or nearby.

To be honest outside of CCC sites I dont think there is such a thing as a "standard" pitch at least weve never come across one. Best thing to do is contact some sites you may want to go to and find out what they have available. Dont forget that you will have to get the tent, guy ropes and a car on it.

We will be doing our main camping on Park sites as the children enjoy the swimming pool and evening entertainment and OH also enjoys evening entertainment not to mention I can pay with my tesco rewards . Most of their pitches are 6m x 6m so quite reasonable however I noticed they have a site in Wales that has pitch sizes of 5m x 2m! I only have one tent that would fit that pitch and I wouldn't fit the whole family in it let alone all the bits for a week away

Good idea to think about this before buying a tent unlike myself who bought 'oversized' tents which I wasn't happy with so used that as an excuse for another to OH.

Hi
We are booked to go to Golden Sands a Haven Holidays park in July.
It has EHU and a max pitch size of 21' by 21' or 6.4M by 6.4M.
There are 2 of uss going so having a tent that will not fit should be hard.

Blummin' heck, I don't think a 6m x 6m pitch is 'reasonable'! Are you sure that is the pitch size? You have to think about parking a car, possibly a trailer, then there are such things as guy ropes and safe distance between tents.

I know many places don't have designated pitches as such, but a 'reasonable' pitch to me - and what I thought was more usual - is 10m x 10m.

We'd certainly feel squished on a 6m x 6m pitch, even with a small tent.

That's what their website says - 6m x 6m.
I've booked one in April and contacted them as my van is 6.9m long - they said that it would be OK. Maybe they just say that size to discourage the unnecessarily huge tents you see with 3 or 4 people in them.

Since where I am going has a pitch size of 6.4 m x 6.4 m and when the end canopy is on it will be more than 6.4 m I called the site office to check how much they stick to the rules. They said that it was a rough guide. There is 6 m between each 6.4 m Square pitch they are not bothered if you go over a bit but pitting a 9 m tent on a 6.4 m pitch is a bit too much, Paul I would think the wolf would be ok but the Yosemite might be a bit big. When booking ask at the on site office first, they will give you a better idea of the size of your pitch will actually be.

Hi I have a 9.1 by 7.9m tent and can hardly find anywhere that will take this size, which is sad as if u have a tent that sleeps 8 then obviously it's going to be bigger than standard size especially when u have older son and daughter who can't share, campsites need to change their attitude and accommodate for larger families

I would agree that a standard pitch is about 9 or 10m deep x 10m wide. As already pointed out you need to fit guys, car and allow a bit of space for sitting out. You also need to have a fire break distance of 5-6m between your tent and your neighbours tent. So you are looking at no more than a 7 x 5m tent on a standard pitch and that is really pushing it as it leaves little sitting out space and your guys are pretty much up to the front and back boundaries.
It all depends on the layout of the campsite and whether it is an open field or a formally laid out site with designated pitches. A site with tarmac roads/ fixed hedges etc is unable to be flexible and a large tent would then need a larger pitch if the site had larger pitches available or you would need to book 2 pitches. Basically the bigger the tent the more you reduce your options and the earlier you need to book if going to a laid out campsite. If going to a campsite with open fields then you will have a much better chance of booking later. Although often the more open fields will not have electric hook up. For info we do have a few much larger pitches and can take tents upto 8.5m but once they are booked that's it I'm afraid.

We had to downsize from our Outwell Maryland Xl because of the difficulty in finding pitch sizes on commercial sites (it was 11m x 8m with guys pegged out!) We switched to an Outwell Montana Lake, which is approx 8m x 6m with guys pegged out and have never had a problem pitching it anywhere.

Unfortunatly find a campsite to fit any size tent on is becoming difficult if u want a pool and hook up ect as we tenters are being pushed out for hard standing fully servied pitches amied at a caravan. We have a montana six and fit on a standard pitch just in North Wales we find it difficult to get a pitch if we take the awning too.
