Hi am very new to this camping lark and have a stupid question what is the difference between a tent footprint and a tent carpet? Does one go under the tent and the other goes in the tent

Got it in one, the foot print is effectively a protective layer that goes under the tent and protects the bottom of the groundsheet from damage (it also gas the benefit of keeping moisture and dirt off the bottom too (it's pretty much a large tarapulin) a bonus when it comes to taking down the tent when packing up.

Carpetting may appear a luxury for tents, but is a great aid for heat rentention and of course comfort, like the footprint it also protects the upper face of the ground sheet from damage.

Not a stupid question at all.

They tend to be specific to the tent football lady so I'd suggest having a look at sites like 'world of camping' or 'towsure' and of course ebay - you could try the manufacturer's website too.

A cheaper way to make a good footprint is with a large tarp....pitch your tent over it and then cut it to size - footprints are effectively just tarps already cut to the dimensions of your tent anyway!

And the cheapest option for carpet is either buy a large picnic rug or this one:

 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GELERT-430x-370CM-TENT-CARPET-RUG-DOOR-MAT-CAMPING-/150669625274?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item23149c07ba

you can cut it to size or just fold it under as I do so it can be used for other tents if needed.

A lot of tents these days have the makers name.. ie..Hi Gear, Outwell, Coleman, etc etc. And the model name..ie...Gobi 4, Montana, etc etc etc printed on to the fabric of the tent. Usually on the front,or to either side of the front of the tent...If you can get to your tent, find the make and model you should be able to get the dimensions of the tent on the internet somewhere..Press the tent review button at the top of the page, that will take you to an extensive list of tents with pic's and sizes to browse through.

If making your own footprint cut it a little bit shorter than the size of your tent so it fits under your ground sheet. Make it bigger and you could have water pooling between the footprint and groundsheet if it rains.
Jelboy
Ps: I have the carpet for my main tent(living area) for the sleeping pod(inner) I use a large piece of canvas folded to fit whatever tent Inner I use at the time.

Hmmm see your problem there, might be as wise to pick up three cheap rectangular plastic (cut to size) gound sheets and arrange them in a y shape and just carpet the living space.

Get down to the local building supplies yard...They sometimes stock heavy duty plastic sheeting, the stuff used for screening off areas on a building site, or pond liner from a garden center would do.Builders were in my work a few years ago putting in a new line, tiling the floor etc.Area screened off with plastic sheeting, when they finished they stuck it in a bin!! Asked my manager if I could have it,and came home with 2 rolls of the stuff.

I use it under the tent, even if it has a footprint.

Those of you that were on the Pillaton meet might recall that the zip on my side door failed one night. I used this sheeting, some clingons, clothes pegs etc to block the doorway for the rest of the weekend Great stuff!!
