Anyone else get this feeling?

I took up camping about 5 or 6 years ago when a couple of regular camping friends of mine were off on a trip and twisted my arm. So I went out and bought a tent, a sleeping bag and a matt, packed a bag and I was off. I didn't do too bad with my choice of tent (Wynnster Shrike 4) but I was totally naive about everything else. It was "summer" so I bought a single season sleeping bag, and my rubber mat left lots to be desired.

Nevertheless, my friends pointed out the errors of my ways, I picked up a new sleeping bag on the first day and thanks to being with experienced campers, thoroughly enjoyed myself and picked up the camping bug.

Not too long after that I picked up a Vango Orchy 500 and went camping about twice a year - my first trip just with my wife was fun but challenging. I was inexperienced at keeping food chilled without electric, using gas lanterns and stoves, portable BBQ's and pitching tents...I always wondered how others made camping look so easy.

Fast forward a few years and I'm now nearing the end of a "camp every month for 12 months" self-imposed challenge, I've got 3 different tents for different camping scenarios, I've done 3 solo trips including one winter trip in up to -11C recently, and I'm planning a solo wild camp for the spring.

I know that learning what to buy and getting the right equipment is vital to furthering ones camping ambitions - but have any of you looked back at the "old you" and actually been quite proud of how far you've come?

So I guess I'd say to any newbie reading this - if you've picked up the camping bug, then keep doing your research and keep camping - it just gets better and better, and you may surprise yourself in a few years :)

OK, so Im feeling nostalgic

Crayfish, you could not have worded it any better!!   As you did, we started out the very same way and without the help and advice from our camping friends, UKCS and fellow campers on site we may very well have given up long before now.  I am so glad that we stuck it out - even if it has cost us an arm and a leg over the years!!  All part of the learning curve and lots of fun!!

I wish I could afford to camp every month, but it's something I generally aim towards in the summer months.

For many others on this forum and my self it is quite an obsession. I am glad to hear you are on your third tent already I've got three: Small, medium and large, yet I am still after a fourth.

I don't know what I am more obsessed with; camping itself or equipment. There is always a new gadget around the corner that I "need". Camping hasn't been a cheap hobby for me, what with fridges, tables, chairs, cookers, new estate car, roofbox, roof bars...the list is endless!

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. Most people on here are pretty passionate about their hobby. You are amongst people who won't think you are weird if you are excited about a new tent or cooker etc. I think we're all as potty as each other.

Nostalgia is good :)
I think back to my first independent camp and to be honest its laughable. The tent was as waterproof as a knitted pair of swimming trunks (which sadly I also had). My sleeping bag was made of two army blankets and if I wanted hot food it was a case of making a campfire and holding something pre-cinder to the flames. I was however 12 years old and 10 minutes from home.
I got the idea through my teens as regards being properly equipped by joining a climbing club. Apart from one occasion I was always dry, warm and well fed.
Now its a case of semi glamping. I still resist the ehu idea though.
It's good to hear that people get the most out of their camping, as you seem to be. Thanks for the post.

LOVE THIS POST

My friends and I managed to burn down our tent on our 1st unsupervised camp (somewhere in the early 80's....) and had to be rescued by my father during the early hours of the morning (luckily we were only 3 miles from home!). Didn't put me off though and 20 yrs later I have 12+ tents, a camping 'shed' that rivals a 'go' outdoors' stockroom and have camped every month for the last year! We all live and learn, my best learning experiences have been with 'seasoned' campers and I hope to keep on camping and learning!!  I fully submit to EHU from November-March but after that it's gas only lol!

Great post, which just had me skuttle off to look at old early photos of the first efforts (without parents).

Small ridge tent, 1 single burner, a torch, 2 sleeping bags and a bag full of pot noodles and cans of beans.

Evolution would be an understatement...yet each time we go away now (and we try to at least once a month) we see something new, or a solution to a particular problem presents its self. Thanks to a variety of ever changing sites that we now visit there is no such thing as a standard setup anymore (although some fittings and kit can be universally applied).

I hope that our camping will never become routine and predictable, as to us that is part of the experience. Over the last year we have had the absolute pleasure of meeting some incredible and welcoming people and this has brought yet another level of enjoyment.

2012 upward and onward (and probably alot more tents and kit in the process) and other I hope memorable year in the field.

Camping strips away the superficiality of modern life and enables my 4 legged friend and I to walk some of the prettiest lanes and countryside in the world and meet some of its nicest people.

I started 30 years ago when I walked a pack pony across southern England, the pony carrying all my gear, running away heartbroken after losing the love of my life. With its raw simplicity, I know that camping healed me that summer.

That was 1982 and over the 30 years I've honed my skills, made many (many!) mistakes and had the most enormous fun in my own quiet way. I know I've grown.

Still not sure about -11° in Feb without hook-up! Curious enough, however, to wonder if I might give winter camping a go ... hmmm, thanks a bunch Crayfish! Just proves, you never stop learning from others ....

Another fine post Crayfish!! And a great topic starter as well!!!
Yes I would say I've grown in my camping experience, But still learning

1st ever trip with my young family..Rather large frame tent. Mucky brown colour with no inners, and no G/ sheet..Slept on basic light s/bags on roll up mats. Heads resting on the suitcases we had brought to pack stuff in..Heating and cooking done on a wee primus stove. Milk butter etc kept in a bucket of cold water etc etc..Booked for a week...Mid week a two day thunderstorm rolled in..on the second day of the storm we gave in and asked grandad to come fetch us. Gets out the car and slips in the quagmire the field had become, right on his back..I go to help him..I slip as well..Everyone soaked through as we packed up...Dried ourselves off in the cafe at North Landing Bridlington were the staff were really kind to us. Home to G/dads in Leeds. Where the sun was splitting the trees!!!!!
Yep a long Loooong way from that 1st trip which funnily enough ignited a camping spark in my family as we went again the next year....

Defo a great post....LOVE the fact that Jelboy had to be rescued too lol!!  It has me thinking back to when I started camping properly (not the tent igniting escapade of early 80's mind) and went on my first meet. Was trying to cook a proper breakfast in the pi**ing down rain underneath a tarp held up by 2 eldest sons whilst looking enviously at our neighbours who had the sense to bring a gazebo......A FECKING GAZEBO!! Had NEVER encountered one of these mysterious creatures before that meet and it was like manna from the gods!! How envious was I....How many times over the weekend did I think ' I'm getting me one of those!!' ....and I did, several of them before I realised that they aint great in high winds lol! have now adapted kit to suit, but memories are great eh??

I reckon the tent/equipment envy that(Cough! Cough!!) some of our members on here suffer from. Can act as a spur to our growing as campers. Initially we look, we see, we want.

Its only as we grow in experience that we look, we see, we (sometimes)want, and we learn to discard, if it does not fit in with our set up....Yeah tent envy...Is good!! I of course have moved on from that stage........

I started camping late in life at 41 six years ago with my late partner who retired from the army a few years before we met.

The first trip's set up was basic, and we did not have EHU, as it was only a short trip as part of a car rally.

We then added some furniture, including a gazebo that nearly blew away in the wind and threatened to take the tent with it. Not smart!

I then bought a new tent, the Khyam Excelsior XL, so that we have living space without the need to use a gazebo etc...

We had a few good trips in the Excelsior XL before his sudden death in Nov 08.

I decided to keep his dog as my own, and to continue camping on my own with the dog, as I had most of the gear already.

I needed a new tent that I could pitch on my own, hence the Khyam Freelander, a smaller and lighter tent than the Excelsior XL that had the excellent Rapidex Quick Erect system.

I also had to adjust my gear list and bought dedicated camping gear to save on space, and invested on a roof box.

The Khyam Freelander served me well for 3 good seasons, until it was damaged in high winds last September 2011.

I now have a canvas Hypercamp Escala 4 which is a great tent. However, it is bulkier, which means I would need to invest on a tow bar in order to carry a larger load. I am in the process of saving up for a trailer.

Since camping on my own in 2009, I had camped in the winter 3 times and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The gear list now still has items from the first camping trip 6 years ago such as tables and chairs. However, it has taken me 6 years to find the right stove that can be used throughout the year (a Coleman Dual Fuel 2-burner stove).

The gear list now is completely different to the one for the first trip.

I have learnt a heck of a lot from UKCS forums about all things camping related, and am still learning every day.

Looking back, I have come a long way from a townie who was not too keen on the great outdoors, to someone who camps throughout the year and lives in Crocs!

I have many happy camping memories from the past 6 years, and hope to have many more in the years to come.

Happy camping everyone!

My camping with the pack pony in 1982 was so basic but all I remember was what great fun it was.  I had a summer weight sleeping bag, one of the early foam mats and a tiny stove which I still have somewhere.  My one luxury was a tiny portable radio.  Don't think I washed much for two months ...
