This is my feeling exactly and is the same for all insurances. You will be glad you took it out if something goes wrong. If nothing goes wrong, and in most cases it doesn't, then you will have thrown money down the drain.
You have to weigh up what you feel more comfortable with...having the cost of replacing camping equipment if it gets damaged or stolen or paying out a large sum to an insurance company year after year with no return.
If you really feel that you need to have some spare cash to hand in case something goes wrong then you would probably do better to put the money in a bank account or a cash ISA...at least you can get it back again if you don't need to use it.
