we really want a better way to keep things cool when camping. we have a cheap cool box atm and its beyond rubbish. I am thinking about getting EHU but we would still need something for weekends away too (with no ehu). do any of the plug in fridges have an option of using them without electric? Im a complete novice and honestly have no idea what it is we need. I also dont want to spnd any more than necessary but want something safe and robust enough to last a few years. It would be for keeping milk and food fresh for trips ranging from overnight to a week or more.
3 way fridge running on gas is what you want, also runs 12v in your car & mains as well, ie 3 way, so plug in overnight at home, put you food in from home fridge in't morning & transport on 12v to site, then run onsite on gas. Takes up a lot of room in car tho. If new price is too dear, search ebay. Usually a few secondhand on there.
Ok the first two listed here have bi metal strip heat exchangers and can only cool to 20 degrees below ambient. Great for the UK but when it is +30 outside or in a hot tent you may have a fridge that cant get below +10. Notice the sort of ledge that goes round the corner inside the box this is the cooler.
This last one is a compressor fridge like you have in the kitchen, turn it right up and freeze stuff like a brick. Great on hot days or in South of France and will freeze anywhere. We have one they are the best.
For me I prefer to have electric, dont forget it will ne on at night in the tent while your asleep.
We have an igloo maxcold which we use for week long trips, it's fab, frozen bottles of water are still half frozen at the end of the trip. After 3-4 days we add bags of supermarket ice every other day or so.
For weekends we use a plug in cool box (car one) with a converter - we always have hook up. The only reason we don't use the igloo for short trips is because it's so big, I'd happily buy a smaller one for shorter trips though, I'm that impressed with our big one!

also could i then run this on ehu if we are away for longer? Do they work like a normal fridge? so safe to keep meat in for a couple of days etc?
sorry for all the questions!
Sam
We have a 3 way fridge and it works brilliant on gas. You will also need a Calor gas bottle. The smallest one will last you ages as its only like a small pilot light. Are they safe to use in tents? I'd say yes, BUT just use some common sense. If you are in a small tent, I wouldn't really reccommend it, but a larger well ventilated tent should be fine, just place the fridge away from where you sleep and keep some vents open. They are plenty cold enough to keep meat and all your other things. You can plug them into your car when you travel and if you do have hook up, you can plug them into the 240v.
We've got a 3-way fridge & it's brilliant. We use ours inside our frame tent on gas. If you do use it on gas don't make the mistake my hubby made - he turned the dial to the second 'gas mark' to light it, but forgot to turn it down after half an hour. When I got the milk out for breakfast the next day, the milk was frozen solid, so we had to wait for it to thaw out before we could even have a cuppa

how safe is gas? Does it just run off a normal canister? are they fine to leave running in a tent?
Thanks
I notice both tents you list in your profile have a fully sewn-in living area groundsheet, and it's not advisable to use any gas appliance (including a fridge) inside the closed tent, for well-documented concerns about carbon monoxide.
