Hi

we really want a better way to keep things cool when camping. we have a cheap cool box atm and its beyond rubbish. I am thinking about getting EHU but we would still need something for weekends away too (with no ehu). do any of the plug in fridges have an option of using them without electric? Im a complete novice and honestly have no idea what it is we need. I also dont want to spnd any more than necessary but want something safe and robust enough to last a few years. It would be for keeping milk and food fresh for trips ranging from overnight to a week or more.

how safe is gas? Does it just run off a normal canister? are they fine to leave running in a tent?

also could i then run this on ehu if we are away for longer? Do they work like a normal fridge? so safe to keep meat in for a couple of days etc?

Ok the first two listed here have bi metal strip heat exchangers and can only cool to 20 degrees below ambient. Great for the UK but when it is +30 outside or in a hot tent you may have a fridge that cant get below +10.  Notice the sort of ledge that goes round the corner inside the box this is the cooler.

This last one is a compressor fridge like you have in the kitchen, turn it right up and freeze stuff like a brick. Great on hot days or in South of France and will freeze anywhere. We have one  they are the best.

For me I prefer to have electric, dont forget it will ne on at night in the tent while your asleep.

We have a 3 way fridge and it works brilliant on gas. You will also need a Calor gas bottle. The smallest one will last you ages as its only like a small pilot light. Are they safe to use in tents? I'd say yes, BUT just use some common sense. If you are in a small tent, I wouldn't really reccommend it, but a larger well ventilated tent should be fine, just place the fridge away from where you sleep and keep some vents open. They are plenty cold enough to keep meat and all your other things. You can plug them into your car when you travel and if you do have hook up, you can plug them into the 240v.

Downsides - they are bulky and pricey.
