We have an Outwell Montana 6 2011, but need to buy a carpet for the living area. Are the Outwell PVC backed carpets better than say the Gelert PE backed carpets?.

I ask as the Outwell carpet is £80 but we have found a Gelert carpet of a size that will nearly cover the area needed for £29, will there be a noticable difference in quality between the two? Oh and if the carpet does not fit to the edges of the tent area will it be a problem?

don't know about the quality issue, but Ii bought a non model specific carpet that doesn't reach the sides and it's not really an issue, we don't tend to walk round the edges.

Have never had a gelert carpet so can't compare, outwell are good though. If the carpet doesn't go to the edges,it may move, but if you have furniture etc pinning it down it should be ok,tent carpets tend to move a bit anyway. Heck of a price difference, after all it's only to make it a little cosier for a short while, personally would go for the cheaper option but that's my opinion.

we use a Gelert Seabury 8 carpet in our Monty 6 and it's lovely...its odd shape meant having to buy a smaller Gelert carpet so i could physically "replace" the missing corners on the Seabury 8, but now we have a rectangular carpet that fits the living area of the Monty 6 perfectly...and just for the record, the price of the two Gelert carpets came in way under half the price of an official Montana 6 carpet...

Pretty much all outwell accessories are over priced and from what ive seen the carpet qualities are pretty similar between brands due to weight.

I have three gelert carpets, the Corvus ,lakes bury and the Atlantis . The are all good quality. I also have two Outwell carpets ANSI would say gelert match them in quality.

I have a Vango carpet and an Outwell one and though I'd say they were overpriced there's no doubt, in my mind anyway, that the Outwell one is much better quality.
We've had ours for maybe 6 years and no sign of wear. Last year, prompted by someone on here, I hung it on the washing line and pressure washed it. Yes, that's right with a high pressure hose. It came up just like new and the backing has not separated from the front.
The Vango one is more like a woven fabric, and there were a few pulls in it first time I used it. Still it's a lot of money and both do the keeping the floor warmer bit as good well as each other.
So, If I was buying for a tent I wanted to keep for a long time I'd recommend an Outwell for long life if it can be fit in the budget.

I like the carpet I bought, it does'nt fit completely; did'nt have any problems sliding or ruffling up, it seems a decent quality, cannot make a comparison to others, as it's my first.  I think it's an Outwell.

I would not buy a carpet at full price, I bought mine in a sale with further reduction at the till.  I only paid around £20

Our Outwell carpets are much better quality than our Vango was. They were more expensive than the Vango one but then so were the tents. Personally I like them to fit well when you first lay them as there is inevitably some movement through constant use plus it's rare a pitch is perfectly level.

We have 3 carpets (we have Vango, Gelert and Kampa):

  • Our Vango woven carpet (2009 model) is lovely and thick, survived without marking a glass of red wine over it, but bulky to pack as its thick. This fits our equivalent of the Monty (the Vango Columbia 600). I believe Vango's carpets are now fleece topped.
  • The Kampa one although comfortable is more the thickness of a picnic blanket but as a result rolls up nice and small for packing (great for the weekend tent)
  • The Gelert one is about half way between the other 2 in thickness with a fleece top. However, although it is only 2.3 x 2.3m its made up of 3 lengths with dark blue binding tape connecting the strips on the top of the carpet as well as underneath, which creates a bit of a ridge and doesn't look particularly nice (one strip is only about 30cm from the edge of the carpet). We have cut this carpet to fit our touring tent so its not so critical and in doing so we've cut off one of the strips and rebound the edge so its not so segmented any more.

The Vango one is also made of several strips but you can't tell as they are just sewn seamed on the top and bound on the back (just as strong but far nicer and no ridging). The backing on all of them seems comparable. The difference is more in the top fabric and amount of padding.

I don't know if all Gelert carpets are like ours or whether they have changed how they do them, but for a carpet the size of the Montana, the multiple strips and binding would be very unsightly and annoying in OHO. I cannot be certain how Outwell do there's but from pictures of other people's tents, I believe that if they are made of multiple strips (probably are, given manufacturing constraints), there will be fewer strips and they'll be more subtly connected (as with Vango's).

We have a couple of Outwell carpets (Montana Lake & Vancouver 500) and a Sunncamp Shadow 800 carpet. Definitely a quality difference between the Sunncamp and Outwell. The Sunncamp backing ripped on first outing. If that info helps anyone.

We invested in some half inch elestic and large safety pins. Slot the elastic through the tents anchor points around the tent and secure it to the carpet with the safety pins, carpet moves very little then.

Result!!!. I found on an internet Camping retailer they were selling Outwell Dakota 8 carpets for £54 delivered, now the Dakota sized carpet is 400x350 virtually identical to our Montana 6 living area and its in the correct colour. Very happy!!.

Thanks for all your replies/help.
