I am planning to go on our first camping holiday with my family (three adults, two children).  We cannot find information on how much it will cost us at campsites.  Do they charge per person, per tent or per "pitch" regardless of number of tents.  What size is a pitch?  We will have more than one tent. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Different sites have different rules....when you say you can't find out how much they charge, can I ask where you've looked?

Some charge per tent plus EHU ( price depends on size of tent ). But other sites charge for the size of tent, per adult and per child over 12 ( usually). Plus EHU.
It really does depend on the site.

It totally depends on the site.  The site I have just got back from was £5 pppn (per person per night), but others will charge in various ways - some I can think of are as follows:

Per pitch + extras - This is normally given as £xx per pitch per night (a pitch includeds x adults and x children.  Further adults / children / dogs etc are an additional £x per night

Per pitch based on size of tent - either by dimensions or by person up to 3 man small tent £x per night, 4-5 man £x per night, 6 + man £ x per night. some of these will be broken down even further.

There's obviously the with / without electric hookup options (EHU - you'll need your own leads and EHU unit for your tent).

Some sites will have charges for kitchen tents / pup tents / gazebos etc and for additional cars etc.

Depending on the site some will have super size pitches, which will be extra - and there's also sometimes low - mid - high season to look out for sometimes, too...

The easiest thing to do if you're unsure is to send them an email or ring them,  It could be useful to have the dimensions of your tent available in case they ask for them.

Good luck - You'll get the hang of it soon enough!

it's a minefield, they all seem to have different pricing strategies. Just phone and ask

the reviews on here are pretty good... most will have a mention of pricing structure so I'd pick a site you fancy and look it up on the reviews here.

good luck ;)

If you are reading the reviews under the camp site search section on here there is usually a link to the camp sites own web site, if they have one. Usually they have their pricing structure or if not there will be contact details to ring or e-mail. Once you get the hang of it you'll find it a lot easier, but do please read the reviews first as they are very useful.

As others have said there is no single standard either for pitch size or charging structure. SO it may be best to decide the location you want to visit, use the reviews on here to narrow your search down to the kinds of sites that sound like they fit your needs and then contact them for info about costs, pitch size and availability.

Thanks for your replies on this.  At the moment we don't have a particular site in mind.  We have been given an BNIB 3 man Outwell Nevada tent which DH and I will sleep in and are trying to decide whether to buy a bigger tent ie 6 man for the three kids and a bit of living space and storage or to buy the older kids two man tents (preferably sited at opposite sides of the campsite!!)  as they might love it so much that they want to go off on their own (the oldest is sixteen) either in the future or to be with other yoofs on site.

I'm also finding it frustrating that any campsites that I have looked at, don't seem to give pricing details online unless you go into the booking form and then they often just say "ring for details".

Bigger tent so they can hang out with their new found mates but come home to sleep... and make them sleep in the 3 man...probably will fit 2 of them better than 3. that way you get to kit our the big tent and have more space for airbeds or campbeds and dims lol.

most sites have restrictions on who is allowed to camp and family groups are welcomed more than teens in groups so you'll probably be stuck with them for a wee while yet. ;)

Even as someone who has camped quite a few times, the variation between pitch sizes keeps me from buying a new tent.

I found booking this year, I'm not sure if our Icarus + extension is too big for the site we are going to!
