Hi all, I have recently purchased a Outwell Oakland S tent for short weekends with my son/daughter.
My question is after looking at the dimensions I'd like to know how manufacturers calculate the size of the sleeping area in a tent? Taking my tent as an example, the size of the sleeping area is 220cm x 180cm. Taking the size of our coleman and hi gear airbeds, they don't seem to fit.
Do they use a universal guide or is it specific to each manufacturer? The Outwell airbeds also don't seem to go, although I suppose they could work out the size based on camping mats as opposed to airbeds?
They work on the size of a camp mat which is approx 700mm wide by I think 2000mm long

Not always, it depends on what sort of camping you do. Personally I dont care how small the bedroom pods are and I like a bit of living space but dont need a tent the size of an aircraft hanger.
Most of our trips are 2 or 3 nights so I want to get the tent up quickly and I dont need to fill it with tons of stuff from home.
We use the rubber red and blue airbeds from Argos which are slightly smaller than standard. We can just get a double and two singles in our Vango Zetes which has a sleeping area of 210 x 240 for four of us.
Crikey, RichO. If your ever tempted into buying the posh recliner type camp beds, you'd better add on the price of a new 8 man tent aswell. Our beds are titanic size, one per bedpod which leaves no cat swinging space. The cat seemed a lot happier mind.

My old 4-man tent will just accommodate a double airbed in the sleeping pod. You can't get it in the door if it's inflated though, and I forgot to mention this when I lent it to a friend.
He was not a happy bunny when, after an hour with a knackered footpump, he found he had to partially deflate it to get it in and then pump it up again.
I once tried to just use a double airbed with the kids in our 3 man tent and woke up on the floor wedged between the airbed and the side of the tent. Our youngest was sprawled out on the airbed taking up most of the room.
After that I was determined to find single airbeds that fit! And yes I have had the problem with getting the airbed into the tent inflated too.
55cm per person is the standard believe it or not anything over that is a bonus. I believe its outwell that quote a sleeping capaity and then a comfort capacity
