Now that is a good idea. Though would have to be near a manned reception area for me to want to use them.

We don't take anything that we can't carry with us during the day as even in your car things are not that secure. The Police are always giving out warnings for people not to leave valuables in their cars.

If you lock yourself onto the tent you would have to be sure to have a knife nearby in case you need to escape. Why not just leave the bedroom pods with the zippers at the top, then he can't get out of the bedroom? You could also tie a small cat's bell onto the zip toggle.

We've never had a problem with theft of electrical items or valuables from the inside of our tent, although it is nice to leave these at home. Part of the joy of camping is not having all these gadgets and making your own entertainment. The only thing to watch out for is cake thieves (which we've had go missing from our kitchen unit outside)!

Cake thieves?

How funny! .. sounds like people who've got the munchies after a few too many sherbets!

I'll be sure to lock away my Mr Kiplings in the car with my diamond tiara then!

Never had anything nicked in 45 years of camping. The only theft I've ever heard of on a campsite is the odd bottle of wine left outside the tent, or a can or two of beer. Certainly locking the tent is counter-productive, for the reasons already given.

The only things we take camping that are worth pinching are our iPods, cameras, binoculars and wallets, most of which we'd take with us whenever we leave the tent as they all fit in a rucksack or handbag or just pockets. If I have anything larger which I really want to protect, I leave it in the car boot, covered with the parcel shelf or a picnic blanket.

One thing I always bring in overnight is the flagpole and any flags we're currently flying. It's very removable and would be a pain to replace.

If you try and think as a thief might think, a tent is not a great option for pinching stuff. It's right in the middle of a field, or else up close against other tents where people may be inside, or else on view to the site owners or anyone wandering around the area. Someone creeping about, in and out of other people's tents, would stick out like a sore thumb! Likewise the car - not a good target unless the site is really isolated and quiet, and you're not going to get budding villains right out in the wilds. Plus campers do watch out for one another and notice quickly when all is not well. It feels very odd if you're not used to it, but your tent really is best left unlocked. You're very unlikely to get anything pinched.

Have never thought about locking the tent.. all they'd need is a pair of scissors or a knife and they're in anyway.. Father in law made me laugh the other day when we were telling him about our camping trips.. he said.. what if someone steals your tent when your out for the day!!.. ..another thing that had never crossed my mind.. would be a struggle for them for sure with all the crap we take and the weight of the canvas

The only time I've had trouble with thieves is Reading Rock festival 1974, I'd gone back to the tent early and caught someone trying to undo our fly sheet, I hit him with me handbag and sent him packing!!!!

I've never suffered a theft in some 30 years of camping. I don't really have anything worth stealing, other than my mobile phone which goes with me anyway, and my little radio. I would really miss the radio if it went, but I don't worry about theft on campsites.   I truly believe most people are very nice and if my radio goes this year, it won't affect that belief - even if I talk tbrough gritted teeth for a few days!
