We double-use our fire bucket to keep the milk cool, as we don't use an electric fridge. (and beer, as TT says!)

We have a fire blanket too, just in case the stove cylinder flares up. I have heard a story on here where this happened, and the quick-thinking camper threw a fire-blanket over it and heaved it out of the tent all in one movement. Saved a lot of expense.

Obviously always check your equipment before you go, or when you get there, before you use it. Particularly gas piping - check the 'replace by' date.

Happy camping!

A torch with a strap on it and a penknife attached to the strap kept right at the side of the bed just in case you need it.

Fire bucket - doubles as an extra water bowl for the dog, as well as keeping drinks cool.
A fire extinguisher and first aid kit live in my car so I always have those with me.
Must get a fire blanket.
I take a sharp knife into the bedroom - just in case.
I have always taught the kids that if I ever give the command to get out now, quickly, and quietly without grabbing anything that is exactly what I mean and why.
Now mine are older, they can help with things like the cooking - but when they were younger they were taught to stay away from the cooker/bbq etc.

In the past I have read post from people who go on how careful they are, and don't leave cooking unattended etc - you always have to remember that the bloke in the next tent may think it is A OK to nip to the loo whilst his bacon cooks.
And yes I do accept that one fire bucket may not be very effective on a well alight tent - but as part of a water chain it could help keep the fire from spreading.

FRESH WATER.
I am amazed nobody has mentioned the importance of having a reasonable quantity/supply of water around.

Make it as easy to use as possible, so that it will be.

Mostly this is for drinking (you can get through a lot more fluids out and about in a field for a weekend than you would hanging around at home). It is VERY easy to get heatstroke when camping and heatstroke is one of these things that prevention is easier than cure.

It also has advantages for washing - a clean campsite is a happy (& safer) campsite.

Otherwise, it less an issue of having the right toys/equipment than it is of knowledge and attitude:

Camp discipline: Keep your campsite clean and tidy. When you finish with something, put it away so that it doesn't get lost/broken/tripped over

Learn some first aid so you know what do when someone does draw blood/burn themselves/stand on a hive of rabid wasps.

As for the toys, start with the basics and get solid outdoor gear - unsurprisingly being cold/wet/sunburnt# and miserable is a safety risk!

Fire extinguiser: Foam, 2l. Dry power settles which can mean it doesn't work when you need it to. Foam will put out most things. You want a reasonable sized one because you want it to actually be able to put a fire out, not fart at it.

Minor injuries kit: I can't remember what is in mine of the top of my head. Anithisamines, co-codamol, second skin, eyewash, kids suncream*, mosturising lotion, burn cream, you get the idea. It is ment to deal with all of the annoying things that can spoil the fun (insect bites, small scrapes, sunburn) rather than a serious incident.

Friends: Having other people with you helps. They can tell you to drink some water, that your shiny bald head is starting to resemble a beatroot and that what you are about to do is stupid and they will be taking photos.

# = This is the UK. Yes, you can manage all three at the same time.

* = The kiddys stuff is normally better than the boring adults stuff. It's water proof, sand proof, factor 9thousand and generally designed for a small ball of engergy running around in the sunshine rather than a grumpy old git sat on a beachtowel.

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Make sure you know where to find the contact details for the local doctor/chemist etc if you need one.

Not really safety equipment but always worth taking a roll of duct tape and a basic tool kit. Solar lights to highlight the guy ropes at night is also useful
