If the family aren't keen then stick to second hand.
my plan is that once ive spent lots of money on all the kit we need/want he will be more keen as he will want his moneys worth lol failing that im great at nagging
and daughter just needs to realise that what i say goes we have done butlins for last 9 years now its time for change lol
your all amazing thank you so much for all your advice and helpful comments taking other half and kids out today to surch for new items although ive been told im not to impulse buy everything i see today and have to wait till i have slept on it n decided for sure other half knows me too well lol even daughter is excited that she is going camping window shopping as i told her she needs to pick a few new toys to take with us when we go incase of rain also think the nephews excitement is rubbing off on her lol
Impulse buy in Poundland , but take a bit longer to think about tent - I'm sorry I didn't wait ( got the £50 from Tesco vis a vis and haven't had it up yet, but very worried it's not going to be great!) Hubby is convinced it will be fine, so hell mend him when/if it's not ;)
Having said that, the general concensus on here is don't spend a lot on your first tent, use it to find out what you like/don't like, need/don't need. Also that if you're comfy when you go to sleep and get a decent night's sleep that you can cope with pretty much anything else.
Thats it,if you sleep well you can cope with just about anything!
As for kids...hats and socks on,hot chocolate and a tale of the "camping fairy" and they sleep like a log..(the camping fairy just makes it up as she goes along!!)

and lots more besides
My suggestion would be that before you throw yourself in the deepend with a whole week away you do a night or two first at a local site.
It's only through spending time in the tent, preparing meals, sleeping, etc you will understand what you need and what you don't, it's amazing what small things you forget to take.
Hi there nikki we have just had our first weekend away with new tent and equipment, we went locally to try it all out , putting the tent up for the first time ,seeing what we had forgotten etc etc, any way as in previous posts we had a fab time but the only problem we had was our air bed leaked badly that after about 4 hours we were on the floor (we were given the airbeds so cant really complain), so for our next outing i am going to invest in a good airbed and an electric hook up and a small heater to take the chill off. We really enjoyed the weekend and both wife and son did too , we are looking on going again in the next couple of weeks. Hope your week goes well but try and have a night somewhere first as a dummy run to practice
Hi no shopping was cancelled thanks to my lovly nephew deciding today would be the day he was to up chuck only made it to the door was gutted so treated myself to a few bits on eBay n did loads of reasurch
On a better note I gave daughter some paper and pencils and she drew lots of lovly camp pics and now seams to be getting rarther excited

Have you seen the bell tents? Karma canvas, soulpad or bell tent.co.uk.
We got the cheap vis a vis tescos tent. We survived but not more. The set up was ok but didn't really like it. Went campo g 3 weeks ago and some friends stayed in the same tent - got blown down and a pole snapped :/
We got a bell tent (4metres) after our first trip and now we've upgraded to a bell tent 5 metre with bedroom inner. LOVE IT!!
Oh... Sorry, just seen you've not got a car! Bell tents are quite bulky as they're canvas
