Reading about safety and practicality of cooking in tents I realised that I havn't seen a proper camping kitchen tent in use and wondered what the difference was between cooking in a tent/ awning/ extension and cooking in a kitchen tent apart from the obvious height advantage of the kitchen tent? Thanks

We use a seperate utilty tent.  For me the advantages are

Keeps all the kitchen clutter out of the main tent.

Keeps cooking smells, grease and condensation out of the main tent.

It's completely seperate to the main tent so if there was a fire my beloved tent should survive!

I can set it up as a decent working kitchen and go in there and cook relatively undisturbed.   Bliss.

Ours is a Outdoor Revoltion XL Outhouse, lots of room, tall head height, good ventilation, perfect!

No difference really just safer for you and family, cooking in a tent is a risky topic in light of recent events resulting in the sad loss of live's due to barbecues being left in tents....it make's perfect sense to cook away from you humble canvas abode and that's what these day tents offer you...safety.

We cook in the extension, we'd not cook in the main tent and a seperate kitchen tent is an extravagance too far. The recent tragedies have come about more thru unattended heaters and BBQs overnight than from general cooking.

We do both, depending on how long we are going for and which tent we are taking.

Weekends, usually involve cooking in the tent. The tent is always well ventilated - doors and windows open, plenty of air getting in and out. We use suitcase burners, and as far as I am aware, they dont give off any dangerous fumes, so as long as you are careful, there is no reason they cant be used safely in the tent.

For anything longer than 3 nights, I do like my utility tent. It means I can have a spacious, well laid cooking area. The clutter and "stuff" that takes up so much space is all in there, giving us more space in the main tent.

We cook outside if its at all possible weather wise, failing that in the porch with tent doors shut and porch ones wide open.

All fuel burners give off "fumes". The danger lies in lack of ventilation so CO, carbon monoxide will form as there is a lack of oxygen to make CO2. It accumulates in a closed atmosphere and in the blood so low level exposure over a period of time is dangerous.
Note
Yellow flames - bad
Long simmering - bad
Blue flame - good
Quick Boil - better
Headaches are the first danger sign, if your legs are wobbly - call an ambulance.

We use an easycamp utility tent, has a metal frame to hang things from.
The front and back can be poled out so well ventilated. Usually just pole out the front in the morning and leave unless we are leaving camp.

I'm thinking about a Utility tent and from the link above I can see they're quite cheap so it's just finding the space to take one and then my only worries would be about being charged for an extra pitch by the sites.

What's the score with site charges?  Does everyone normally tell the site up front or do you take it and see how much space you have when you arrive?  If you just pitch it when you arrive do the owners then come knocking on the door for more money?

I am thinking exactly the same as you Obzi. We were away at the weekend and it was really windy so cooking outside was impossible. There isnt a lot of space in our tent for cooking and we ended up with the tent smelling of food for ages afterwards.

Our main tent doesnt have anywhere to attach a porch and I thought that if I got a kitchen tent I can use it with any set up. I am thinking that if you just put a kitchen tent up without saying anything surely no-one is going to ask you to take it down? We use a toilet tent sometimes and I have never asked if its OK to use it.

I would love to know if anyone else takes this approach and gets away with it. None of our tents are massive so it doesnt seem unreasonable.

We cook inside our large tent but with the same safety precautions as at home and well away from the sides of the tent. If there is a fire, modern flame retardant tents give you plenty of time to get out (as evidenced by tests) and we never use the stove when our son has gone to bed. Our son has a "no go" area when we are cooking and abides by it and the gas is turned off when not being used with any gas in the pipe burnt off.  Our large tent has metal poles so there is no risk of the wind or a ball hitting the side in on the stove and we have both high and low ventilation.

With the smaller tents we cook outside under the tarp or canopy, again well away from the sides and supervised the whole time.

Pitching time for us is kept to a minimum (as we prefer to be out and about) and our cooking set up is streamlined too so don't need extra space for kitchen units etc, fridges etc. etc. A separate unit that probably cost only slightly less than the tent itself would just add unnecessary time and money. A utility tent might keep unruly kids and animals away from the stove, but it would have to be some distance from the main tent to prevent any fire bridging the gap.

Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!

I am still undecided on whether to buy a tarp or kitchen tent due to additional charges and space issues.

Not been charged for a utility tent yet, but then we tend to go to small sites.
The tent packs down quite small.

I don't like the stale cooking smells left inside the tent so I'm thinking about a utility tent as I can't find a side porch that will fit mine

Last summer we camped at Thistledown in the bell tent. I knew we were going to get a couple of wet days and can't do without my 06:00 cup of tea.

Found my 30 year old 2-man ridge tent that I used as a teenager and with the addition of some longer poles and a windbreak it made an excellent camp kitchen!
