I think the debate went a bit astray in places and the idea of the question was not to ask about the worlds pollution problems or how to solve them. Agreed Camping is a low impact pastime even with EHU, heaters etc compaired to jetting of to the Maldives. That wasnt the question. I wondered if by choosing a staycation, along with the fact that we are outdoors and affected by climate and weather it would indicate a preference to consider these things in our decisions. For some not and the idea is not even vaguely connected.
I am off to retreat to my non ehu campsite in a nice quiet farmers field in Wales with no electric lights so I can see the fantastic stars and have some nice local cider and cheese for the weekend
To answer your question. My conscious desicion to camp. Was not influenced by enviromental factors and the impact it may have.
Just the pleasure of being outdoors. My nephew enjoys visiting me and camping, as he enjoys looking at the stars. He has difficulty of doing this, while living in London. because of light pollution.

If you spend time in the environment (ie sleeping and living outdoors) would you not tend to think about more to protect it? Thats not a disconnect. There are plenty of eco- campsites and there is a connection surely?? Do people who live in a wood like trees? Do people who live by the water like the sea? Do people who live outside like fresh air? I am totally surprised how many cant see it.
I totally get where you're coming from, Elanman, and felt the same. However, you only have to look at the gas-guzzling 4x4's and vast amounts of electrical equipment used by some campers to realise that some people feel very differently!
Still greener than taking a family of 4 to Dominica or Cancun for 2 weeks though, so I guess we shouldn't knock it.

Wait for meeeee! I hope you have a,lovely time! and thank you for drawing us away from tent carpets!
------------- March- Padstow
April- Forest Glade
June-Grizedale
July-Jedburgh
and lots more besides
Personally I don't want EHU and all the mod cons/tvs/heaters whilst camping. I want to sit and chat or just enjoy the scenery and not be distracted. No TV program or film can beat a clear night sky bursting with stars :-)

So by pointing out that however you camp you will be causing some kind of "footprint" that makes me a "straw man"?
I never realised you were not open to other peoples opinions
Enjoy your camping (I mean that sincerely) your way, I shall enjoy mine my way & lets hope NEITHER is detrimental to the Earth
Well actually yes it does - Straw arument taks the exteme position in the other direction. Even breathing creates Co2 but I am hopefully not going to stop that anytime soon. . Of course I value peoples opinion thats why I asked the question. I know that gas, coleman fuel, batteries etc all have a footprint - we have to live dont we? Its about moderation and if the enviroment it is a consideration or not in what we do. Do people put on a jumper on or just turn up the heater? If you have all your jumpers/jackets and its -5C outside fair enough you have no more options left. Thought it was worth asking the question of campers who like outdoor life. Was really prompted by people prefering to leave heaters on all night to keep warm. Once your in your sleeping bag I dont really see its needed. A wolly hat works wonders in bed and doesnt have a footprint
Im off tonight - looks like I will be too warm not too cold this weekend - so its not a worry .
