Hello , we started camping when the children Were little and had a mid sized tent and the basic's all fitted in the boot of our estate car and we loved it so much.   over the passing years our gear increased and increased and the tent got bigger and bigger and we needed the car boot a roof box and trailler !!! until it only seem worth going away for 2 weeks at a time because of the effort with all the kit ( it felt like we were moving house each time) so the kit has been packed away for 2 years but I really want to enjoy it again so I'm going to down size tent ,kit and not take a trailer. Has anyone done this and recaptured the freedom of less kit .

Don't worry it's normal,  Cut every thing back to basics and start from there.  Make three piles

1. what you need

2. what you want

3. what you can do without

Number one pile pack in car.  Number two is only if it fits.  Number three pile is where the remainder of number two pile will end up.

Should number one pile still be too much.  Same procedure again, this time only what you actually need.

Good advice. Its easy to get tempted by all the stuff available out there, but much of it you don't need and really doesn't add much to the experience IOHO!

We have a trailer which gets used for long trips with the big tent (although isn't dedicated to camping), but we can equally fit a full camping set-up in the back/boot of the car. Its actually nicer to travel without so much man-handling and setting up.

The basics always go with us in 1 folding cart and 2 tupperware boxes that have been chosen to fit in the boot and store everything in a way that it is easily accessible when in the tent. Clothes stay in Vango cargo bags that open fully on top so easily accessible in the tent. Bedding is all contained in an XL drybag so little to handle and the airbeds are stored in a smaller dry bag. We have either suitcase stoves or a Campingaz kitchen extra with its integral legs so don't have to carry a kitchen unit. We also have 1 roll-up table, an umbrella style chair each, plus an Outwell Baffins table cum stool, some PVC folding buckets and a water container. We use a folding loo that doubles as a bin during the day and a couple of cool boxes/bags. Each tent has a carpet and footprint and we use a Vango Adventure Tarp. Finally our son has a box of toys which travels on the back seat.

I was given the ultimatum that everything had to fit on one of the rear passenger seats and below the parcel shelf, which equates to a full boot. I have now perfected the art of finding compact, multi-purpose and/or folding items that fit within the packing scheme and we don't miss a thing.

We can even camp for 3 people with all the camping gear fitting in a wicker basket in the back of a vintage Landrover. In which case the kitchen set up fits within a nest of saucepans and a digital camera bag, which includes such as a brewing mesh as a colander, multi-serving tools, folding cups... The stove fits in the nest of saucepans. Again, we don't seem to lack anything and the tent can be up and fully fitted out within 10-15 mins.

-------------
Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!
