Oh dear, the British weather. We're going on our first ever family camping trip on Wednesday and it's decided to rain. Any tips on what we need/don't need for camping in the rain? I know we'll need to dry the tent out when we get back and I'm thinking we'll take the porch and a doormat and enforce a strict shoes-off rule, but anything else we need to bear in mind?

If you've got toddler(s), then an all in one rain suit or rain coat, trousers and wellies are a must. You can then stop cabin fever by going out puddle jumping. My 3 yr old loves it.

As someone once said on here. "There's no such thing as bad weather, it's a matter of having the right clothes". Says it all really and I think they were absolutely right when you think about it. Even having a caravan can sometimes restrict you from going out in the rain so I'm now trying to think positive on this issue and although these items don't come cheap I think it's got to be the way forward for me anyway. My point is that campers obviously find it even more difficult regarding rain from past experience so having the right clothing has to be the number one priority.

I hope at least that you've got a head start on the washing up by leaving it out in the rain.

Keep the vents open as if you batten down the hatches and all escape inside the tent to avoid the rain the condensation will be a nightmare! Plenty of fresh air through the tent will help to keep condensation down - always a bit of a problem when a few bodies are in a polyester tent. Don't hang wet clothes/towels in the tent if you can avoid it as again that will not help thecondensation problem.
And of course everything the others have said - take plenty of wet weather gear and you'll have a ball! Make sure you have plenty of changes of clothing for the kids - they'll get wet & muddy (and love it!)
Have fun!

I find it costs a lot more if it rains.Instead of the beach we head into town for some shops or an indoor swimming pool which all cost money. As we're on more of a budget this year I'm praying for sun in July(not too much to ask for is it ?)
I enjoyed reading your blog ,my son is 5 also.Ive got a wordpress blog but I've not mentioned camping on it so not a lot of point mentioning it on here yet but I'll work on that

I will second the costing lots if it rains! We were hoping for lots of outdoor picnics and beach games. Unfortunately it has been lots of cafes for dinners except tonight when the emergency rations came out! A trip to the cinema was just over 30 quid. Ouch!

We go tomorow too, I think we shall be needing scuba gear...lol
We have decided due to weather it is best to take a laptop & a few dvd's for the kids, they have books & colouring stuff & wellies for puddles & we all have Rumikub, Manopoly & playing cards...........etc
But hopefully we will still find plenty of outdoor stuff to do no matter what the weather throws at us

Ok so what do people do camping in the rain with a dog. Most indoor activities are out of the question.

We're off to Derbyshire tomorrow, the forecast doesn't look brilliant - but the weather won't stop us having fun! The kids have packed lots of games and their DS's.
We're still planning to go walking just had to pack the right clothes.
