We got a set of knives from Ikea which came in their own plastic "block", a bit of wire threaded through the block & round the knives keeps them in place on the move....may be a bit bulky for what you want, but works for us :-)
My concern is more with the legislation covering the carrying and use of knives. I dont have sharps in the form of cutlery but with my style of camping I frequently use a fixed blade camping knife, a leatherman multi-tool with 2 locking blades and a small single handed axe.
The legislation up here is mainly governed by the Criminal Law (Consolidation) Act 1995 and the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons Act) (Scotland). The law is not clear in certain aspects but in the main it is down to the user - me - to prove that I have good reason or lawful authority for having the "articles" with me in a public place. The fact that my car is loaded with camping gear "should" provide reasonable excuse for having said articles but I wanted to clarify this. I popped round to the local cop shop and the big sergeant although very helpful, could not say for sure where carrying my sharps was lawful but did say that if I were to be carrying them without any sign of camping gear in the car then I would certainly be breaking the law.
So the bottom line is I wont carry my sharps in the car without my camping gear! I dont want to be arrested for carrying a dangerous weapon! My sharps are always hidden out of view in a separate bag and when at the campsite, they are out of view if not in use.
Re: knives and sharps, even a pair of plastic frame glasses can turn into a lethal weapon - just watch Godfather III!
An axe is not part of my camping kit, and I doubt if I would need one.

Just another thing to be aware of with sharps
Gulp!! Never thought of it that profoundly. Just take a bread knife and a multipurpose cooking knife. No axe or chainsaw, so hopefully won't be arrested as the local psycho!!! Nothing is simple anymore. When I was a boy scout in the late seventies, I used to walk around the campsite with a 9" blade strapped to my side. No one even queried it.

I've still got my old scout sheath knife, maybe I should wear it the next time I go camping.
funny we were checking our kit ready for a trip in a couple of weeks and i commented on where to store knives....so have stolen a few great ideas from here!
