We did the drive from south yorks to newquay last year and are also doing it again next sunday, luckily there is two drivers and a we use a roof box not a trailer. But I also prefer to leave at 3am and do it in 1 trip, we did swap at the end of the m5 last year as I didn't manage to get a few hour sleep prior to setting off. We sorted out stopping at services with mcdonalds was a lot cheaper for coffee than costa bomb coffee places.

I understand your thoughts though and probably would still try and get sleep b4 setting off and do it all in 1 run if I was the solo driver. Don't think I would sleep well knowing all my stuff was in a car park while i slept.

We are driving down to the La Rochelle area of France next month. We don't have a trailer but the family we are going with do, so it will be a slow trek in convoy. Rather than stay in a Travel Inn we have booked the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St. Malo. It is a slow boat over to the continent and we have a cabin so we can have a nice meal and a good kip with the trailer safely in the ships hold. We should then be refreshed then for the French part of the drive. On the return we have booked a hotel in Calais for the night ready for the Chunnel back so the trailer will be left over night but I understand they have a fenced off and secure parking area. Should be an adventure :)

We are in Sheffield and are also travelling down to Cornwall in a few weeks (Padstow this time) we set off about 2/3am and normally stop at Hopwood (J2 M42) services for the kids to go to the loo and some breakfast, then we swap driver for 2 hrs or so....then we stop again for a break either near Taunton or Exeter depending on time and the mood of the kids .....then from leaving he M5 its the A395 and A39 and a few back roads. We generally just stop now and then for the loo and a brew which can add upto 2 hours onto the normal 5 1/2 hours it would take if I was to go down In a normal car (solo). We normally have time to kill before being allowed on pitch but I hope to take the 314mile journey at a more leisurely pace as we are making this trip in our new (well 53 plate) ex PTS Ducato 9 seater lwb Ambulance, and instead of being careful on what we normally take we are going to take as much as we have.....so It might take us a while longer LOL......(sorry I seemed to have gotten carried away with the info) (but I cant wait to go this year Im SOOO Excited) hahaha

Camping is like life, what you get out of it depends on what you put into it!!
