I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what options there are for powering a few small electrical items while camping.

I am aware you can get a EHU at various sites but quite often we go to sites without these so I was wondering if there are any other options.

Can you do something with a leisure battery and get a 12v socket - I'm only talking of powering an electric cool box, charging phones, possibly a portable DVD player - all of wich can be connected to a 12V supply.

Any info an advice is welcomed,

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan,

I've never used a leisure battery so can't answer your question but there are loads of threads on this here.

All the above would be fine with a leisure battery except for the cool box. I think you would find your battery going flat pretty quickly if you left that connected. If you particularly want to go to more basic sites with no EHU then you can get gas powered cool boxes, but it isn't the best thing to have running in the tent and would suggest a utility tent to run it in.   I run mine off gas occasionally if I'm at a country show but always turn it off at night if it's in the tent with me.

I'd just go with EHU myself.   If you get a leisure battery, then really you need a pulse charger to leave it on a standby charge all the time you aren't using it or remember to give it a top up charge every so often otherwise the battery will die.

If it's any help, I charge my phone in the car. I use a standard phone/car charger which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket. I have to leave the ignition on while it's charging, but it only takes about half an hour. It's saved me from a flat phone battery many times.

My rechargable flashlight charges in the car too.

When there is no EHU I always use a leisure battery with one of THESE
I then connect MULTI SPLITTER (shop around for the best prices). For the little items with a 3 pin plug use a good inverter.
