There's a handful of folk on here who swear by C&CC and never camp any where other than C&CC sites. IMO there are plenty of privately run sites that are as good, if not better than, any C&CC site I've ever seen with cheaper tarrifs and who don't charge you a yearly fee for the priviledge of camping there. If C&CC ever decide to make their pricing more reasonable and/or drastically reduce the yearly fee I'll think about joining, until then it's not for me.

A real shame as what used to be one of my favourite sites has been taken over by them. Prices have more or less doubled for no improvements in facilities.

we joined a couple of years ago, but after our first camp, we asked for (and got) a refund. it just wasnt for us. i know they have a 'no noise' policy but it just seemed a bit too draconian for us. i realise tho that this is why its perfect for others.

we're not noisy by any means, but we were just 3 families sat round a table with a few beers and laughing. about half past ten, a warden came round and 'reminded' us we have to be silent after 11. at 11, he also came round again to tell us to shut up. like i said, we werent being overly noisy, just normal laughing and chatting.

i do realise that noise travels easily on a campsite, but probably our fault for not looking into it and realising that no noise means no talking either after 11.

after having been on some sites with some right scumbags on them, arguing and swearing til the early hours, i realise that the safety net of the c and cc is much needed for some people, but we just prefer being the 'quiet ones' on a normal site rather than feel like we are being out of order on a c and cc site :-)

That's one of the reasons that I would never rejoin the "Club".

I usually camp solo and so am normally in bed by 11pm as I'm up at the crack of dawn, either to move on or to go out hiking for the day. I get plenty holidays, including two months off at what is still described as "summer", so I have plenty of opportunities to camp. However, for most people on a camp site, this is their main holiday of the year - they might not get another - and to expect them to be in bed at the same time as they do when they have to get up for work is (to my mind) unreasonable. While I wouldn't expect disco lights and dry ice smoke, along with a ghetto blaster to be going on until the early hours, I think that anyone on holiday should be able to sit around and socialize past their normal bedtime and would suggest 1AM would be a more reasonable cut-off point. I go to sites where the "silent hours" are more reasonable and it doesn't bother me, I just put a couple of ear plugs in if the noise levels prevent me from going to sleep before the rest of the site.

Anyway, each to their own.

Again, what fantastic & varied responses, thank you all. Our first camping trip last week was nearly ruined by a full on family feud/riot17 in one of the caravans on the tent field at gone midnight, so for a warden to be on site to deal with situations like that is reassurring, so for a young(ish) family to enjoy a peacful night is tempting, however with 3 young kids would there be enough on these sites to entertain, occupy & finally tire them out?

We judge a book by it's cover & read what we want, between selected lines.

Personally I like the standards I know I can expect at C&CC sites but mainly I'm a member to gain access to the CS, THS and rallies which all offer excellent quality, good value for money camping.

I quite enjoy reading the Club magazine as well so I would say, YES, it is worth becoming a member.

We cancelled our membership after a few years. We really didn't think it was value for money and the magazine had very little in it for tent users and their sites weren't all that either.

Why can't we live in the tent..?

I left after several years membership, mainly because most of the "improvements" that they were making to their sites were biased towards caravanners at the expense of tent users.

When I first joined it was purely for tent campers, the caravanners had their own club, the Caravan Club.
