Hi! We are going camping as a family for the first time to St David's Park in Anglesey. Our baby girl will be approx 7 weeks old. Is there any advice anyone can give us for sleeping equipment for a newborn? We didn't have any worries until friends raised their eyebrows when we told them we were staying in a tent for 5 nights with a newborn baby. Any advice would be welcome :O)

I can only offer what I did almost 17 years ago when I went on holiday with my then 4 week old daughter. I took a folding crib. Exactly the same kind of thing folks use for when babies sleep over anywhere, not just on holiday.

Why the raised eyebrows? Your baby will be fine, so long as she's well fed, warm and secure. Congrats by the way

Just the usual I would say. Make sure you keep baby warm and dry, maybe take a hot water bottle to warm the cot before putting baby in to sleep. The baby sleeping bags, Grobag etc, keep babies snug. If you are using a carry cot, maybe keeping it raised off the ground to prevent rising cold.

Moses basket will do the trick - my three either slept in their moses basket or in our bed* when they were that small.

A vest, socks, wee hat and a warm baby-grow should do the trick, with some blankets or maybe a gro-bag (although they might be too small for a gro-bag at 7 weeks).

* The co-sleeping thing is safer than we are generally led to believe in the UK, if you follow some simple rules (you can google it if you want to know more). Most of the rest of the world co-sleep with very few problems. The only thing I would say is that co sleeping on an air-bed probably isn't safe, because it can be too saggy...

hi we are planning to go away for a weekend when our son is born , so he will prob be about 2/3 weeks old 17, I am planning on using the carry cot part of the pram for him to sleep in.

The early he gets used to tent life the better lol however if he turns out to be a big cryer at night time then plans will be put on hold dont want 17 campers.

congrats and enjoy your trip 17

When our ds was 6 weeks we took him camping and he slept the best ever now he 1 can't get him to sleep at all .

We too used the Moses basket bit of our pram on a stand then on second trip when a few month old we bought a travel cot

One thing we found usefull was befor bed boil up the kettle and leave to cool down then have it in a flask ready for any early morning feeds

As for what to wear long sleeve sleep suit with some mittens and also a t shirt on top of that and a couple of blankets on top of that . Our midwife at the time loved it but said don't put a hat on as he could get too warm . Which we didn't so left him without and he was fine

Also if possible try and keep the same home routines when camping when it comes to feeds etc as we made the mistake of altering it just slightly and boy did we regret it when we got back home and work

No no please dont put a hot water bottle to warm the bed- research has shown it can increase the risk of SIDS- layers is the way to go

We went away with our 12 week old a couple of weeks ago, with no problems.

For sleeping we set up a Little Life Arc 2 travel cot inside one of the sleeping pods and used a sheepskin rug on top of the mattress for a bit of extra insulation. He wore a standard sleep suit and a "grow bag".

It took us a little longer than usual to settle him, but once he was down he slept through no problem and stayed nice and toasty throughout.

The other tip someone on here gave us (thanks, whoever it was) was to ditch the buggy and use a sling. Worked well of or us, easier to pack and much easier to move around the site - muddy field and buggies not the best combination!

Oh, the sling thing is a good idea! We usually used slings of one kind or another anyway, but most prams don't do well in mud (or snow, for that matter!)

We took our Meg at 5 weeks old we kept her in her Moses basket at the foot of our air bed worked a treat
Be careful with some of these kiddie sleeping bags they can actually get to hot ,a nice sleep suit and a few layers as said before and you will be fine ,she was only 10 weeks old when we went France for 3 weeks!
Enjoy your holidays how fab to ave a little un camping so young

One of these Little Life Arc 2 Cots should do the trick.

I Don't want to sound unkind but please be mindful of how far a baby's cry travels at night. We had a particular nightmare when we camped next to a family with a screaming infant who cried for hours and kept everyone in all the tents nearby awake.

I personally think if your baby still wakes for night feeds and takes a while to settle thereafter it may be too early to inflict that disruption on other holiday makers bearing in mind they have no control over things. If baby takes ages to settle maybe one parent should drive around to somewhere away from everyone else until the infant settles.

As a mum of twins I'm not unsympathetic to the demands of young children but don't think everyone else should have to bear the noise during there supposed relaxing break.

Personally, crying babies (as long as they're not mine!) don't bother me, and I think most campers would be sympathetic.

I know it isn't ideal, but I wouldn't suggest people forego their holiday because of it. On the other hand, leaving them to cry it out isn't an option you should use on a campsite!

I took my youngest who's now 10 when she was 6 weeks old in my old VW.  My worry was if she cried and disturbed others but she was fine.  I took the ready made milk with me and she slept with me in the double bed.

Wow thank you guys for the fabulous advice!
We have a carrycot part to our pram which we were contemplating using and will definatly layer her up at night. I don't know why we were worrying. You have all very kindly put us at ease. In regards to baby Willow crying at night and disturbing other campers, fortunately we have been blessed as she only wakes once a night and doesnt seem to cry. We don't have the hassle of bottles either as she is breastfed.
We may have to invest in a sling and a little life arc cot - thank you for the heads up x
Hopefully now all we have to worry about is the Welsh weather ;0)
Thank you again
