Hi all I'm new on here was pointed this way by my brother

Anyway I have just got a lichfield canvas frame tent its never been used but had been stored for 5+ years

We went camping last weekend and had lots of rain on the first day which showed up a little leak!

the rain just beads off the tent but as above we had a little leak which left a nice puddle

Is if worth reproofing the tent? the rain was pretty heavy at one point and I've heard in really heavy rain to expect a little to get through

If I have to reproof it what's best to use?

thanks in advance

No, don't reproof it yet. It probably just needed to get a good soaking then a drying what with it being stored for along time. The fibres shrink when it's been dry for too long. Once they get wet they fluff up (but the first leak doesn't stop), but once its dry it should then be oK the next time.

Also, the weather has been torrential where alot of water has dropped in such a short space of time, so in all likelihood it could be that it just go 'overwhelmed' as it were.

The best thing to do is get it up again and get it wet again using a hosepipe. If it leaks again, it needs reproofing, but hopefully it won't. However if you do reproof you can use Fabsil. It would then be up to you whether you do the whole thing or just the patch where its leaking.

Excellent thanks for that

We had it up when we first got it and we did wet it on advice from my brother but it didn't let any water in in fact the water never even soaked in it just run straight off!

As I say the rain was really heavy and was constant for around 6 hours,

I will get it up again at some point and give it another good soaking to see if it leaks again,

Thanks.

Hi You will find that new canvas will leak a little when new, after a wetting the cotton fibres expand and you should have no problems, Also never allow detergent to come into contact with your tent, I hope you enjoy your next trip.
