I react badly to bites, affected areas swell and become inflamed and itchy. I take good old Priton and hyrdocortosone cream if I get bitten.

I have found eating marmite helps stop the little buggers attacking me. Marmite on toast for breakfast and a spread of the stuff on my cheese sandwich at lunch time. If I don't eat it I seem to get bitten, don't know why

A friend of mine swears by the 'don't bite me patches' ... never had the guts to try them myself and not sure if they are only useful for mozzies.

I go the Marmite route and take Berocca tablets as well ... Something to do with the vitamin B1. Also use SSS as well ... Smells disgusting but seems to work for me!

Well thanks everyone, tried the citronella candles 2nd night, now Im home Im using cream and taking tablets. I agree I do have a bad reaction, also when we are abroad the mozzies are the same.  Will try the skin so soft in 2 weeks and may try that Smidge what a few have mentioned. we were at Middleton in Teesdale by the way

I am told that to fight the effects of the Highland Midge (Culicoides Impunctatus) 40 fl.oz. of any good Malt Whiskey will do the trick.

However, to stop the little sods biting you in the first place, any Midge Repellent that contains either DEET or DMP has, since the 1940's, had a proven track record.
And the higher the concentration of these (and therefore the more expensive) the better they will work.

As a avid angler and camper, I too was put on to Avon Skin, the stuff works but a few of my fishing mates do look at me in a funny way.

Camping is a bit like fishing, you can never have enough new equipment.

Watch your anit perspirant if its got perfume in it it attracts as would perfume, after shave etc.

They run out of the Avon soft & gently cream, spray but had the ones the Royal Marines use in the jungle and that is the oil spray so got that instead. It is an oily one so no good for wearing good gear and going out as oil; makes you shiny but it works

For the smidge if there are a few of you why not get together to order bulk  and split them upbetween each paying theirs. Get a discount for bulk buy I noticed.

I bought bulk of the oil to make sure as react bad to bites. So I got 5 of the oil sprays.Better safe than sorry, little blighters.

Skin so soft works grand but I am a convert to smidge. It's wonderful. Keeps those blighters from biting

I came back from Bala yesterday where we were camped right next to the river. I used Skin So Soft, repellent spray, citronella candles and citronella incense sticks all at the same time - myself and a friend were still very badly bitten. I don't honestly think it makes and awful lot of difference what you do. Just take anti histamines and some antisan cream with you to counter act any itchiness.
