Blimey, been
home nearly a fortnight already, so here are some pics, if I can get it to work, of our trip to Cornwall.
We last
camped in 2010 so were really looking forward to our fortnight at Polruan
Holiday Park. Finished work at last on 29th June, straight home to pack the
car, have a meal and a few hours sleep and set off in the early hours of
Saturday 30th June on the 6 hour 333 mile journey. We arrived on site to a
gorgeous sea view, but with an ominous rain shower heading our way so we
cracked on with putting up the tent before it hit. Rolled out the footprint, sorted out the
poles and pulled the tent out of the bag and..........oh dear. Right footprint. Right poles.
Wrong tent. Somehow we'd brought
the Carolina 3 instead of the Idaho L.
His Nibs was worried for a minute that we'd just have to go home and get
the right tent. I was wondering where
the nearest camping store was to get some carbon poles from, thinking 2 of the steel
poles from the Idaho would fit the Carolina, while His Nibs was feverishly
rattling around in the back of the car, to emerge triumphant with another bag
of poles! No wonder the car was full. I
was so relieved to get the tent up and have a very welcome cuppa. Here's the view from our pitch.
Suffice it
to say it was rainy and windy at times but enough about the weather. The Eden
Project is well worth the money as you get 12 months free entry after your
first visit so we went twice. I just
wish the zip wire was open when we went.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-18878063 They were doing rehearsals for the Eden
Sessions on the days we went, so we saw Plan B, and Noah and the Whale which
was a bonus.
The Lost
Garden at Heligan is gorgeous and we explored pretty harbours, walked a little
of the coastal path, did Land's End, Michael's Mount etc. Padstow is pretty but crowded and we didn’t
like Newquay at all. We visited Fowey
several times as it was only a trip across the river from the campsite and
liked that area very much, also Looe, Mevagissey and Polperro. I wonder if that policeman ever managed to
sort out the chaos when a German coach took a wrong turn into Polperro! We ate freshly caught fish and seafood, I
gave myself food poisoning eating a crab (my fault) and generally relaxed and I
wish I was back in my tent right now.
The hill down to Polruan harbour (and the pub).
We met a
lovely couple from here, DaveAndrea, who kindly let me have a look inside this
little beauty which I believe is an El Dorado from Obelink. (hope the rest of your stay was fab guys!) His Nibs never knew he’d married a tent geek
and raised his eyebrows at my feeling the canvas J
We also had
the unexpected treat of watching a cruise ship depart Fowey harbour, we hadn’t
realised the harbour was big enough.
It’s also fun going over from Polruan on either
the foot ferry or using the car ferry at Bodinnick.
His Nibs
helping to push a car on the last morning, it was still chucking it down and
after all that rain, although the field generally drained quite well, it got a
bit soft at the bottom gate.
We decided
to pack up a day early to put the tent up again on Saturday at home and luckily
got her dried out and all the mud wiped off ready for next time. We’ll
definitely go back to Polruan as it’s such a nice site, so quiet and tucked off
the beaten track and the owners do everything they can to make sure you enjoy your stay.
