I am very excited - off on our first proper camping trip on Monday (proper as in a proper campsite with other people as opposed to a friends field with friends!).

We are are off to Waxham Sands at Norfolk (mixed reviews on here but I don't care). Just me and my two girls (12 and 10) as hubby is too busy at work (self employed) although my sister and her partner and dog (who are seasoned campers) are on the pitch next to us.

My dilema is this. No matter what type of holiday I go on I like to set off, make as few stops as possible and get there and all sorted to still have some of the day left. My sister and her partner class the journey as part of their holiday. It is about a four hour drive from us (they live very close to us) and they are talking about setting off at about 10.30, stopping for lunch and then arriving at about 3.30pm. I would rather get off early and get there as early as possible (not sure how early I can get on the site - am going to ring tomorrow to find out).

But I am not sure if me and the girls will be able to put the tent up on our own (I was going to put it up with brother in law). It is a Vango Diablo so is pitched inner first. I will be able to get all the poles in, all pegged out and the inner up but am worried about me and the kids managing to get the outer cover on by ourselves.

I am assuming that other campers will be around so do you think that anyone is likely to come to our rescue if they see me struggling, or if I will become the inhouse entertainment whilst people just sit back and watch!

The girls are keen to get there as early as possible so they can go on the beach. I could just arrive and park up and wait for my sister to arrive before attempting to put up the tent, but I know that once I am there I will want to get it all sorted.

I'd get the girls to help. After all, they want to get there early too, them helping you with the tent could be their part of the bargain.

People will generally help, especially if you ask, but if you're arriving around the iddle of the day they may all have gone out!

I would also suggest getting there early and setting up (if you wait for your sister they could be delayed and you could end up waiting for ages and may have to put it up yourself anyway).  Have you got room at home to erect the tent and do a trial run first?  Don't be afraid to ask for help when you're on site.  Good luck and have a lovely time.

I would go for it - I am sure that there will be others around who could lend a hand.   
You have nothing to loose by going down and trying to pitch by yourself - with the girls helping.    Pack a picnic so that you can have a break at some point.
If you do it then you know that you could go again on your own - something that I have done since my two were little.   Long story, but it was either take them on my own or loose the holiday - and I pitched a 6 man frame tent solo ( 5'1" woman).
I have a rule - we get the tent up, bed pods set and then we can have fun.   Now that the kids are old enough they usually go off the the play area, while I chill with a cuppa and a book - but when they were younger we would take a break at that point and either walk around the site or go out.
Once I know that the tent is up, and that we have somewhere to sleep the rest can wait for a bit.

I am going to go for it. I know how to put the tent up (I don't have space for the trial run) and the eldest is up for helping (the youngest will be made to help).

I know that the hardest part will be pulling the fly sheet over the top of the inner but once that is done the rest will be easy.

I am going to ring the campsite this morning to find out what time we can get onto the pitch.

I always like to get to the campsite asap, pitch and then go off for the rest of the day. I had a diablo 600, a royal biaritz and still have a halo 73 all pitch inner first and pulling the flysheet over on your own can be a real pain and forget it if its windy but as already said you can always ask for help

Well, we can get on from 12pm so have decided to set off about 8am. Its about a four hour drive so will have one quick wee stop and snack in the car.

The girls and I are going to put the tent up ourselves and ask for help if needed. The only thing that will stop us from attempting it is if it rains - I am aware that as it pitches inner first it needs to go up quick if its raining.
