How can I convince hubby...that camping is a good idea? I've had sciatica for 21 months now and despite physio, acupuncture, massage, steroid injection, drugs (of the legal prescription kind!), my husband is convinced it's a bad idea to go camping this year. We're due to go tomorrow!

I admit that I've been in agony for much of this year, especially from May onwards when the steroid injection wore off, however last month I changed medication and although I've gained weight (common side-effect and very very upsetting), the pain is so much more manageable.

He thinks that pitching a tent, setting up and sleeping on the campbed will make me worse, aggravate the pain and cause more damage.

Help!

I think anything that makes you feel more positive can only improve your health. Just make sure you have a good supportive bed set up. Hes probably just seeing you improve and doesnt want to set you back again. Good luck, i hope you get to go.

Thanks! I'm thinking positively but he's just not convinced and has told me that if we go, it'll be constantly on his mind that the slightest thing could trigger a flare-up. I'm wondering if it's worth it this year as I don't want him worrying about me, he needs to relax as well. x

Is it not worth trying a little garden camping first? Hopefully, it will put both of your minds at rest, and if worse comes to the worse, you can give in, and retreat back in the house.

I think as long as you get away somewhere it would help you and your OH. If the garden camping isnt possible maybe just find a cheap b&b somewhere nice and then you can both relax this year.

Would be so sad to disappoint your children.
I'm no doctor, and I may be wrong here, but my dad used to suffer badly with sciatica, I always remember him, when it was bad lying/sleeping on our living room floor, as he found this more comfortable than the bed (also cos when was bad couldn't get upstairs!) But he also used to put a board on the bed...so maybe sleeping on the tent floor with a mat perhaps, may help?? This was long time ago mind, not sure if it would be recommended by doctors!

Hope you get to have your holiday xx

If your back is so bad it wont matter where you are!
i too have back and sciatica problems and i have found that the pain goes through periods of being managable or not. I have just had a week in a static caravan in anglesey and the bed was the hardest and worst i have ever slept on. I always sleep really well on an airbed so go for it and if you have to take more drugs (legal of course)

Will you have ehu?  my mum suffers badly with her back and finds her electric heat pad a godsend.  If no ehu, would a hot water bottle help.  That of course is on top of the meds she takes.  Get the number of the local gp practice when you get there.  I wondered if a raised airbed or campbed with sim on top is better for you than being too low, so you don't strain yourself trying to get up in the mornings?  which ever is the comfiest for you.  If you think you can do it, you'll be able to do it because you want to do it.  Hope you have a fab time if you go and that your hubbies worries are for nothing, bless him.

Thanks everyone. We've been looking at caravans all over the uk and they're ranging from £400-£600+ for a week!! Considering we've already paid our campsite fee's I'm very reluctant to pay more. I tried talking to hubby again, telling him what you've all said and he's still unhappy. I suggested we give it a go and see what happens, that we both make promises...I'd promise to take it easy and stop if/when things got too much for me, I'd also be more than happy to ask a fellow camper to help him pitch the tent if I couldn't manage it. As for hubby, he'd have to promise to let me do things and to trust me to tell him when I need to pull back a bit. I've left him thinking about it.

The weather forecast isn't great and he's now worried we'll have rubbish weather for the whole week. Nothing I can do about the weather!

I'll keep you posted. X

Hope it works out for you whatever you decide.

I suffered from sciatica until I found this Flexibak. I used it for a few weeks and now only get the slightest of twinges.

Can't promise that it would work for you and it isn't cheap but I had got to the stage where I would try anything.

My OH suffers from sciatica and he says that sleeping on the areo bed in the tent is better than sleeping on the bed at home for his back.

We can't go camping this Summer due to an op I'm having next week but I've asked the OH to put the small tent up in the garden so at least I can pretend whilst I'm recovering and as we don't have a upstairs bathroom the lugable loo is now called the en-suite
