Evening all,

Thought I'd share this with you guys. LED lanterns tend to give a cold, clinical light. So I thought I'd try and change that. I bought this.

I then used two of the most yellow wrappers out of a box of quality street, joined together using clear tape, to do this, using an elastic band to hold in place:



The result is the following, using the before and after method:

It's hard to get a picture that shows any colour (had to use flash to show it, didn't work with just the lamp on in the room) but you can see a much whiter light in the first photo and a far more yellow one in the second. The result when in a darkened area now is that instead of a clinical, white light, you now get a light much more comparable with that from a gas light. You lose a little brightness, but this lamp is extremely bright in the first place so the trade off is well worth it.

Try it, it works!



Edit: These LEDs produce hardly any heat, the 'bulb' of the lamp barely gets warm as the LEDs are also far from its inner surface.

Nice little modification i too have LED lights but don't like the bright harsh light they give off, i might try this.

I've mentioned this sort of thing before as I work in the entertainment industry as a lighting technician.

What you've done is a great idea and cheaper than buying lighting gel from a supplier..

However, if people want to chose different colours (different shades of off white even) then anyone can buy lighting gel from a theatrical supplier. They are usually sold in sheets and can be cut up with a pair of scissors. I would have thought £5 would get a a 2' by 2' section but you'd have to check.

We've got 'medium amber' on our Coleman LED lantern (LEE 020) and it's extremely warming...

All very true but you don't get to eat the Quality Street then!

Both are excellent ideas. We have the Ring version of that light and it is very good and versatile. It is very white though.

Snap soggysteve, lampy too (hobby). True Dichroic filters would be the ultimate way to go! I don't know why manufactures don't make RBG LED lamps that are user adjustable? Soggysteve will be well aware of what technology is available to us in this respect, it's is now considered very basic tech compared to some pro-lighting products on the market nowadays.
