Hi

I'm considering buying a 7x3 mtr tent for our large family. Would having a tent this size cause us problems when trying to book pitches?

Many thanks :)

depends on where you book and their pricing structure. Some sites want to know your footprint size, some want to know your berth size, some want to know your occupant details, most seem to want to know a combination of the above. It doesn't seem like an excessive size. I am considering an 8x5m for our family of 4 and large dog

Mine is 7x4 and the biggest problem I have is drying it lol. I have a small garden and a small house so I am actually looking for a smaller tent with extension. I have 4 plus 3 dogs so its not going to be easy. I have only encountered 1 site so far that charged me extra for the tent so just keep an eye on the sites you choose.

In the Uk, I would say more so but my belief is that you buy the tent you want then argue the toss with them.

Many Uk sites are still (in my opinion) in the dark ages when it comes to modern tent sizes. Some of the sites I frequent still expect people to turn up with a tiny little thing or they try to overcharge and frown as if you're some sort of exceptional case..

I personally believe that getting the dwelling you wish to spend your holiday in is priority number one..

It totaly depends on were you want to camp . A large tent can restrict your chose of site. But thats allso why some have multiple tents  . Horses for courses and all that .

It's never stopped us, ours is around that size and if a site says they'll charge us more we simply move on and find a different site. Tents are generally getting bigger so most sites allow for that. The space in a bigger tent is wonderful.

Thanks for the good advice guys. Doesn't sound like too much of an issue and you're right soggysteve - the priority is with finding a tent that your family is going to feel comfortable living in.

Some places do charge more for a bigger pitch but these tend to be the sites that cram everyone in exactly 6m apart and I don't want to stay at those anyway!

What does annoy me is those sites where they charge us extra for a big pitch and then charge us extra per person too. There have been a couple of places where it would have cost us less to have 2 small pitches and split the family between two little tents than having us all on the one pitch!

I have never had a problem with paying extra for a large pitch as ive always thought the bigger the tent the larger the pitch the more I should pay, but ive always thought it odd that on a lot of sites this price only includes 2 adults and any extra will incur surcharges. The sites we normally stay on are all inclusive doesnt matter what size tent or the number of people the price is the same.

However weve just come back from a site in Norfolk and were charged extra for a super pitch and extra for the additional adult and child. We got friendly with the campsite owner who told us that out of the school/bank holidays the site is frequenteded mainly by couples which is why the pitches are priced for 2 adults. During the holiday period (which is the shortest part of the season)when pitches are occupied by families the cost of emptying wheelie bins quadruples, the toilets need more frequent cleaning and the site needs more frequent tidying etc etc etc all of which cost money which is passed on to us

Our Ontario 8 is 7.5m x 3.7m and we have never had a problem getting on a Club site or an independent site.

You only usually encounter being charged extra if a tent is over 5m wide.

Ours is also the same size 7x3 plus extension. We've just come back from Brean too! (Northam Farm) . We've never had a problem booking pitches at any site we've visited, and our tent seems to fit with adequate space around it. Sometimes they do ask what size our tent is though so they can accomodate you. If they don't ask I generally offer the info rather than arrive and find that the pitch is too small.
