Hi, I have an outwell WL 5 that got very wet this week.  I want to be absolutely sure that I have dried it out long enough.  It dried out a fair amount during very blustery winds in between rain showers that day and I de-pitched.  I then laid it out on the grass at home (a sunny day) and it seemed dry after a couple of hours, so I packed it away.

Did I pack it away prematurely, i am now wondering?  I do have the space to lay it out in a conservatory or over my bannisters if need be (not ideal, but better than a mouldy tent!).

So, .... how long does it take to dry out a tent completely???

It doesn't take more than a couple of hours to dry out to be honest.

One thing to make sure is dry thoroughly is your guylines. If they are still damp even if your flysheet it dry when you put the tent away its a disaster waiting to happen.

Ideally it needs to be hanging-up to ensure it is fully aired through we have a Norfolk which is to big to erect properly in our garden but we hang the flysheet over our long washing line until fully dry. As regards the guylines there was a great idea posted a little while ago about removing the guylines and soaking them in nikwax solar-proof or similar so they dont absorb any rain.

Ooh, that pricked my ears up!!

Is this something I could do whilst on site? i.e. a Saturday afternoon job, or does it take hours/days to soak in?
Any info would be very much appreciated.... sorry for butting in, Humbird!

As far as I can remember the original poster removed the guys at home with the tent in storage soaked them in a tub of solar-proof then dried them before re-fitting, this (apparently we havent tried it yet)not only stops the guys absorbing moisture but stops sun-fade.

Wouldn't waxing the guylines cause them to be slippy thus preventing them to function properly ?

Dont think so, I've just Nickwaxed my canvas tarp from Germany (we all know which one) and at first I thought it would feel like one of those old waxed jackets that were populour during the late eighties early nighties.  but after drying it out over the washing line it feels great, doesnt feel waxy at all, more like just well condition if you know what I mean (smells nice too)

Thanks for the replies everybody.  I am erring on the side of caution and have put out my tent across the furniture in my livingroom, where it can stay for a couple of days - I just haven't the energy to put up the tent again outside due to its weight, even though this would be a quicker dry!  Very interesting to read about the wet/damp guy lines - I had never thought about them whatsoever, so its an eye opener!

Thanks!

Humbird
