Hi,

We have a Quechua Base Seconds 4.2 tent, we are wanting the additional Base Seconds Full plus a Seconds +II tent for my son as he now wants to go into his own little tent.

He is 9 years old. Just wondered at what age anyone else's children started to use a little pup tent of their own.

Thank you

Louise

I was definitely out in a pup tent at 9 (shared with my little sister). It depends on the child - how well he sleeps, if he gets nervous at strange noises etc.

Thanks Jane,

I think he will be ok, he really wants to give it a try. I suppose if he's not yet ready the tent will always save for another year.

My DS was sleeping in his own tent at 9. Give it a go with a proviso that if he is at all worried in the night he can come straight back to you in the main tent.

You could also consider a couple of cheap walkie talkies so he can call to you via that if he is worried and doesn't want to leave the tent.

I would have said 10, but different kids mature at different rates. If he's keen to try then go for it!

Go for it. It's a different tent but still only six feet away.

It all depends on the child, the campsite, . . . and the family!

Go with your gut instinct.

If only.

Our eldest (boy, 13 going on 14, 6ft etc), never sits in the same room as us at home, hardly speaks (teenage grunts is the norm) won't even conisider a pup tent.

Ah well, just have to puit up with him in the main tent for now - I think he's scared of the dark still.

Why not invite a friend to come along with him?

I brought my sons school friend camping with us last weekend. The lad (16) had never camped before. He didn't even bat an eyelid when I made him and my son sleep in a pink tent. Took to it like a duck to water, putting the tent up (badly) and learning that if you don't use all the pegging points then the inside touches the outside of the tent and lo and behold water comes in.

He still loved it though!

So I think it's a good idea for your kids to have a friend along.

We have the exact same tent set up you describe. If you look at my gallery pics you can see them. Our daughter is a little older 13, she was getting fed up with sharing with her brother so we bought her the Quechua Illumin pop up tent. She loves it and is now much happier about camping. I had concerns about her being on her own and attached a panic alarm to one of the internal poles just in case.
We will be putting our 4.2 and base seconds full up for sale when I get round to it as we have just bought a Monty 6. But I will miss them when they go as it worked so well, we just want a bit more room now for longer camping trips.

Let me know what you want for them - I'd love a base seconds (and maybe a second 4.2!)
