Here we go,
all campers on a field are in the same boat. We are all in temporary shelters which can be entered in seconds, That is why we look after each other. As for leaving a radio on, great for you as you are miles away. What about your fellow campers ?
If you don't feel safe on site move sites. .Most thefts are festivals. No to be confused with standard campers.
Yes you have paid a lot for what you have regards camping gear, but the value to a thief is minimal.
That is why phones I-pads, laptops, sat navs are locked in the car.

It's just common sense really lock all valuables in your boot don't leave you chairs, bikes laying around. Zip you tent doors shut. Out if sight is out of mind. Just hope when you come back no one has taken anything. That's all you can do really, Try going to busy camp sites with more people around, we went to a quiet one last year and has some tent pegs taken,(never going there again) there is nothing you can do about it. Tell the site owners and tell everyone on here, then maybe if people don't go to bad sites the people who run them will better their security. I really hate people who steal other peoples stuff and will now always keep an eye on my neighbour's and if I see anything that looks wrong I will tell them to go away or use other words they understand. And if I ever catch anyone touching my stuff they will have a really bad end to their holiday.

Like most ppl who have replied we put things like laptops etc in the car out of sight, mob phones we usually take with us and we always close our curtains when we leave the tent so nothing inside is visible. Don't know if that's a good idea or not, but something we have lays done. This year we have bought an extra kitchen storage table for storing things out of sight on a day-to-day basis ie iPod speakers, phone chargers, DS games and DS etc. all that said all I have ever heard of being stolen are tent pegs.

Best security devices ever invented...are the eyes and ears of your neighbours on site...
OK maybe you have never even spoken to them or they to you..But most people get a sense of who is occupying or has use of the tents around them...See you going off for the day and they are going to be about they will keep an unobtrusive eye on your tent...Eyes and ears everywhere on site...Anyone near or approaching or entering a tent that does not belong to them must have some nerve as folk know who and who shouldn't be in there and will challenge them...Even If that's just an "Excuse Me...But"
A few yrs ago we had friends coming over to visit...As we would be out when they arrived we told them to make themselves comfy till we got back...Which they did...They were challenged by 3 different fellow campers till they explained they were friends of ours....Eyes and ears....Cant beat them on site...

You can lock zips cable tie thm even super glue them but still easy to get in and make it look like no one was ever there its ridiculous.

We use alarm padlocks(on ebay in various guises) for anything we are really concerned about if going out for the day.
Lets face it most complaints on here are about noise so if a thief is making noise everyone will be having a nose to see what its about !
I normally put them on a cable through everything like the bikes and trailer.

Echoeing above really. Bikes are the "biggy" as said above, tie them together with a cable. Everything valuable put in the car and take valuables to bed.
When we were camping in the South of France with Keycamp, (the tents being uniform as the tables are in front of the front window) there were some locals who went round in the middle of the night and slashed each window with a knife in a particular place, reached in and picked valuables that had been left on the tables - this was about 25 tents. Fortunately, we didn't have anything stolen - but it certainly goes to show how quiet they were even in the dead of night. It was amazing to watch the reps replace all 25 outer tents (inner tents intact) in the soaring temperatures!
But in general I totally agree that campers are an honest bunch - just don't tempt fate and keep things out of sight.
As regards to taking large amounts of cash - I think I'd rather pay the card fee - but that's me.

I wouldn't carry large amounts of cash. I'd open two new bank/ building soc accts (just so you can separate cards) a with fee free transactions abroad. Our HSBC acct we pay a monthly fee for but covers our travel insurance and other bits and we have no fee cash withdrawals abroad.

If your planning to travel around European countries I would strongly suggest you think the opposite way. Cards are widely accepted and cash is very vulnerable to being lost or stolen. If you lose a card or have it stolen it can easily be stopped. If you shop around you can find card providers who charge less for currency transactions etc and you may get a better exchange rate than for cash.
