We take a microwave when we are camping for more than a weekend..summer hols etc. Its a very basic one and only about 750w.I was camping at Dunbar c+cc site and had nipped to the local supermarket for bacon etc and there it was on special offer! There are loads of uses for a m/wave such as cooking a quick meal when the weather prevents cooking outside...sometimes happens!!! Boiling the water for your first or last hot drink without straying too far from your bed. I like to give all meat a quick zap before it goes on the barbie and hopefully cut down on food-poisoning episodes....But by far-the most pleasure to be had by having a m/wave in your tent...is watching the puzzled looks on the faces of car*v*nners when it "dings" as they are walking past. No, your not mad!

You are fine using a basic 750watt microwave on either a 10amp or 16amp hook up as ling as you dont plug much else in at the same time, especially if its 10 amp.

A 1kw mini-oven will also work, but on some sites the problem can start when the bollard and power supply is shared by several pitches, who then go on to all want to use their high wattage appliances at the same time, tripping out the main fuses to the sites power supply. this can also happen during chilly nights when everyone switches their electric heaters on, even if each EHU bollard is rated at 16amps per pitch, when the whole site just about demands this level of power, the sites supply from the national grid cannot cope, and the whole site ends up with an outage, sometimes as far back as the sub-station that serves the local village tripping out, especially in remote areas with the older type equipment installed.

My elderly Dad worked for the Electricity Board before he retired, and earned himself many a free pint in the sites clubhouse for helping them sort out their electrics and the cheapest tarrif for their needs, most needed to install something called a three phase supply when EHU was installed and became popular to help them cope with the extra demand, those who did not have it were the ones more lightly to suffer an outage, even if they were only a failrly small site with only a handful of pitches.
