I am no expert here, but I think that the stumbling block may be the public transport bit, unless your other 2 kids are of an age and strength to help you carry stuff.
Remember, it's not just the tent you will be carrying (and for 1+3+1dog space, that alone will be a fair size / weight packed away), but the rest of the gear such as lights, cooking gear, all your family's clothes and washing gear, towels, dog food etc.
That is gonna need a lot of hands to carry from where public transport stops and the pitch.
Have you thought about a ready-pitched tent for the family camping experience without the cost of buying and hassle of lugging it?

hi there and welcome to yhe forum, why dont you have a look in the go outdoors in scunthorpe, they should have loads to look at , its a start or look on their website. it depends on how much money you want to spend, just keep posting on here and you will get loads of ideas of other members , hope you get sorted and the little ones will love it - shaun

Have a look at the campsite search on the tabs at he top of the page .
I had a quick look and 12 sites marked on the map within 15 miles. Not sure how much a taxi would be for that distance, or indeed a friend with a car.
Have a look on ebay their are some inexpensive tents on there.
And don't get carried away with the must haves, it's amazing how much fun you can have with out the luxuries we all long for ( and buy , but shhh don't tell )
See if you could borrow some kit for friends , then see what you need.
I'm taking a family of newbies away next bank holiday and today I gave them "the list" a) tent, b) sleeping bags, c) something to sleep on, d) Unbreakable mugs, plates / bowls... e) cooking ( stove / pots n pans, )
That's it! Not a long list , but the other things I have been able to lend them or use between us.
Have a quick look at this tent it seem inexpensive and would fit you all in 111042719900 ebay item number, but you won't be carrying in on public transport . If not have a look at the small low 2 to 3 man tents and buy two , they will be much lighter but with out the rainy day space, Sleeping bags 251173655750 , very warm a double that converts to singles.
Foam mats are the least expensive ( short term)
Picnic set might work
But I'm sure there is. Group of single parents that add threads on here.

Thank you all, i have a few things to look at now :) thats a good start, Im sorry i should have said that my son is 18 my girls are 16 and 6. I was looking at the haven sites where there is entertainment for all ages,cafe ect also, we could just use the tent for sleeping and for our clothes ect, with my little one not having much sight I would't want any big cooking stuff in there, have looked at a wind braker and a small gas ring, for outside,just so we can cook , also the sites have shops ect, i was thinking the least we take the better , i was also thinking about getting a taxi :)

As I pointed out on your other thread. I am a non driver so use trains. And I cope on my own with; A tent upto 15kg A table A chair. Sleeping bag Pillows SIM Blankets for the dog Stove Kettle Toilet Lights Clothes (and lots of other small stuff etc). Food wise I shop locally. (Just used a Park Resorts, which was a short walk from the train station, had regular buses outside, and also had 3 shops within walking distance. As well as entertainment like Haven etc.) ETA: So it is possible to camp in a family tent as a non driver. The only limiting factor is the need to be close to a bus route, or a train station. Which most (if not all) Haven and Park Resort type sites are. Here is all my stuff packed up, to give you an idea.

Plenty of options for you now we know the ages of the kids...And that at least two of them can help carry stuff...A folding trolly...or bag with wheels on(Like the one above) would be a good idea...One tent(big enough for 4 rather than two smaller ones might be better pitch fee wise/weather wise??
On your shopping trips in town have a browse in charity/second hand shops...I have found a lot of stuff for camping....Latest purchase was a re chargeable light for under a fiver,,,And have had folding stools etc in the past...
My priorities would be...Tent...With a good hydrostatic head rating 3,000 HH or over...Good sleeping bags 2 season or above(should tell you on the bag) Roll mats can be bought in places like BM stores...A stove(suitcase one to start with) and lightweight cooking pots(you might have some that could be adapted for camping) and some cheap folding stools to sit on...
Make a list of necessities...and work your way through it...Keep an eye on the adverts in local papers etc for camping related stuff etc...
I don't have transport at the moment...usually hire a van for my camping....But have done one or two backpacking trips using public tramsport to keep costs down....It can be done with a bit of forward planning..
