We lock them to together with a thick cable, the ones with a small loop at either end and round the bike rack then stick a big padlock on them, never had a problem with it.

I've been reading this with interest as we are taking our bikes with us for the first time this year.

Lots of good ideas that I can pass on to hubby.

Thank you.

We take a long length of thick chain, a good padlock, and secure the bikes together, and the wheels to the frame, and then to a solid tree.

I like the idea of alarmed padlocks tho - the 'noise police'- as deliciously described above - would certainly be swift on the scene.

It's a fine line between not wanting to make it obvious they are prize possessions v making them appear too nickable.

we have always just locked them and left them beside the tent - never had a problem and we have cycle/toured with the tent from Weymouth to Plymouth and also around Glencoe area, plus Yorkshire Dales a few times.
We have a mixture of D-locks and sturdy cable locks. Remember to lock the wheels and the frames! It helps not to have bikes that look too flashy, and I think multiple locks looks more of a deterrent than one super sturdy one. So far we have never had an issue.
