Hi,

The last time i went camping in the first weekend of March, one of the elastics for my tent poles snapped. I now need to repair this before next weekend. I'm unsure which tent elastic to get. My tent is cheap and cheerful, so it doesn't have a well known brand name.

I measured the diameter of the pole hole to be about 3mm.
Each set of poles is about 4.5m long.

So long do i require the elastic to be? And should i be looking for elastic with a diameter of 3mm or smaller?

Any help is much appreciated.

All good camping shops do pole elastic on a reel, some will even do it for you.  If you are doing it yourself get a threader.

Measure old elastic mark new  elastic.   Felt tip pen works well. But don't cut.  Thread through new elastic pull until you see the mark.  Tie off, fold poles make sure the elastic is not strained.   If poles now fold up and stay together when connected you can cut the elastic.

Job done 17

When i said that my tent is cheap and cheerful, i wasn't kidding. The old elastic had a good couple of metres spare elastic on each set of poles. I had to tie off the elastic myself. So there was no preset elastic length. lol. oh the joys.

I was thinking about getting my hands on a wire clothes hanger or a thin piece of electrical wire for a threader.

Just as good Shocker,  for the length same as, It needs to fold and hold the poles together.  17

Metal coat hangers getting as rare dobbie horse 17

If at home cotton with a needle tied  at one end,the other end tied to the elastic and  pull through..

As long as you remember to hold one end,you can suck the elastic through with a vacuum cleaner.

Any advice on the elastic itself?

I'm unsure what diameter and length i should be looking for?

The holes in the tent poles are about 3mm in diameter and the tent poles are about 4.5m in length per set.

I would buy a repair kit from a camping shop, as it contains a length of threading wire as well as elastic. There are two thicknesses of elastic. You only need the heavier type for 12.7mm dia poles. I found I had to tape the wire to the elastic, using duct tape. If you tie them together the knot will not pass through.

That's if you want to do the job properly. If you are in a hurry you can simply knot the two ends of the elastic together, and the knot will sit inside the metal connecting sleeve.

The elastic in one of poles for my Coleman Lakeside snapped about 3 camping trips ago, and I've never bothered to replace it!  The pole works fine without - it slots together snugly and the pressure from the side poles holds it in place (the snapped elastic is in a roof pole).  However, all tents are different, and this may not be the case for yours.  I think the elastic is mainly to keep the pieces of same poles together to save confusion, but if they're colour-coded that's not an issue.

Unfortunately that is not the case with my tent. The elastic snapped as i was putting up my tent and it proved very difficult to put up. :(

I've seen this on eBay/Amazon but was unsure on whether it would fit. I was concerned that it would be a little too snug. Would you think that it will fit down?

Less would be better, but use the threader first and pull, if tight pull harder  17 as you stretch it, it will go thinner. 17

Take a pole section to the shop with you if your unsure what size to get!!

I would think pole elastic would be a universal size...but not sure on that...
