Hi all, me and my wife have decided we are going to give the camping world a try, so we have been to go outddoors today and purchased this tent http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-rock-4-tent-p207083 , we have 2 children and thought rather than buy an expensive 1 we would start off fairly cheap and this 1 had good reviews. We are planning on going next weekend on a trial run but i dont have a clue which pegs to buy, is there a universal peg that will work in hard and soft ground or am i best off buying seperate pegs for each type of ground and which are the best 1s to buy. Also we dont have sleeping bags for our kids so was also wondering which bags would be the best to cover winter/summer for around £20 each?

Hi
Can I just ask what you were thinking of sleeping on... The inner tent is only 240 wide so you will only fit a double and single air bed or 3 singles. Its just the typical mistake newbies make buying a 4 berth but not realising you actually need a 5-6 berth for 4 campers. Its not your fault as how were you to know, no doubt you were not asked in the shop how many people were in your family etc.

As Gary has pointed out, a 4-berth tent may be too much of a squeeze for a family of 4.

Good thing about GO and other reputable vendors is that one can exchange/refund with little hassle.

As for pegs, I would advise getting a selection of pegs if budget allows, to cater for different ground conditions.

I carry the following:

Nylon Delta pegs for normal to soft grounds, for the major load-bearing guys

6in and 9in angle steel pegs for guys with lesser loads
5 or 6mm stainless steel hook pegs for securing the tent's ground sheet, and the bin in place, available from the same place that sells Delta pegs (as in Rob/Deltagroundanchors)

8mm T-bar stainless steel rock pegs, again from Rob in case I need them

And another set of rock pegs in case I need them

Also a set of Peggy Pegs that require to be used with a drill (they have their uses)

Lastly, mushroom pegs for the cheapo tarp that I use as a primary groundsheet

If the OP is getting some pegs from Rob and have a dog, then I would advise getting one of their extra long peg extractors and a Delta dog tether, very good products indeed!

I think it depends on the age/size of the kids. When we (single mum and 2 kids) take the bell tent, we all sleep on one double airbed, and it's still quite comfortable, although my girls are 13 and 10 years old now. Mum is a bit chubby , but the girls are slim.

I think it would be difficult to find sleeping bags that cover winter and summer use, maybe a 3 season sleeping bag is a possibility, it can be used with a fleece liner and with an extra blanket when it is really cold.
