Hi all, me and my wife have decided we are going to give the camping world a try, so we have been to go outddoors today and purchased this tent http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-rock-4-tent-p207083 , we have 2 children and thought rather than buy an expensive 1 we would start off fairly cheap and this 1 had good reviews. We are planning on going next weekend on a trial run but i dont have a clue which pegs to buy, is there a universal peg that will work in hard and soft ground or am i best off buying seperate pegs for each type of ground and which are the best 1s to buy. Also we dont have sleeping bags for our kids so was also wondering which bags would be the best to cover winter/summer for around £20 each?

I have found that the round wire pegs are OK as long as there is not too much tension, ie fixing the skirt. Better are the broader flat angle type as there is more resistance against tension and so are better for guys. If you have a rocky pitch you will need rock pegs for the guys.

When it comes to sleeping bags, there's nothing worse than a cold night in a cheap sleeping bag. If you cannot afford more then I would strongly recommend buying everyone a fleece liner. You wriggle into it, and then into the bag. It makes a huge difference, in my experience.

I would start off by duplicating the number of pegs supplied with Rock Pegs.
The wire pegs that are supplied with new tents are as much use as a chocolate teapot and will bend when you hit a stone.
You can always add different types of pegs latter.

As for sleeping bags you don't say how old the kids are.
But as been said above a Fleece Liner in a 300 or 400 gms bag (Tesco) should keep them warm.
Also insulation underneath (SIM) is important.

I only use the pegs supplied with the tent for holding down interior tensoning straps(ground level)on the likes of porches that don't have a sewn in groundsheet(SIG) Or for that wee fiddly bit round doors that I tend to trip over when entering/leaving tent...Rock pegs for everything else(Guys etc)

You will find in a couple of years that you will have a collection of various pegs...And will always find one that will do for one job or another...Rock pegs go into most types of soil/ground easily and stay put so I would recommend getting some...

Something with a good HH rating to go over you(Tent) Rock 4 should be fine...Good bags and sim's(Self Inflating mats) or foam roll mats with insulating underneath and cooker.. pots and pans...utensils should be your priority...Lighting etc can be looked at later as can all other necessities (subject to your own requirements)

Rock pegs would be a good investment! We started off in a similar way to you and we're still using our cheap sleeping bags! Our pegs were from Go Outdoors they still have them, Blue Diamind Hard Ground pegs, 20 in a box for £9.90. We have a huge tent so we bought 2 boxs but you could always use the ones that came with the tent as well as one box.

The Fleece liners sound good (i'm banned from camp shop shopping right now lol) might have to look into them thanks Davyhey! We've always slept on airbeds with blankets underneath to insulate them. The kids have the same with a blanket over the top if it's really chilly.

I used to buy some extra pegs at Go Outdoors when they put the 50% off hi gear voucher out. I used to buy the hi gear ones in a plastic bag for a couple of quid so was able to double up for the same price. As anyone on here will tell you-you can never have too many pegs. Probably worth having a couple of mallets so the other half can knock pegs in as well.
