You can pitch next to me any time KellyP, I'm very considerate, lol

I see you give your location as Lowestoft - I was down that way last September, I camp regularly just north of Yarmouth and have friends who live in Lowestoft.

Have you happened to come down for airshow before? The campsites here fill up very fast for that weekend and you can't find a space to sit on the beach
But worth seeing :)

I was 13 yrs old first camp away from home apart from cubs/scout camp. My mate and I hitched lifts from Ayrshire to Blairgowrie area (60-70 mls ish) to do some paid for work berry picking.
We had a home made tent and what seemed like enough equipment for an Everest expedition. No lightweight gear in those days.
I am 60 yrs old and still backpacking and family camping.

The younger you start the longer you have to enjoy it..

I'd love to come for the airshow but unfortuntately can't with it being during the week, unless I use up holidays from work, which I don't want to do. Could never understand why it's held during the week, surely weekend would be much better?!

Saying that, I've just had a quick look on the 'net and it seems that last year it was held on a weekend for the first time, but there will be no show this year.

I started solo camping at eighteen, but have camped all my life. I am now an oldie, and have had concerns about being among young campers. With one exception, these have all been proved wrong, and I would gladly camp with the young ones we have met. I do have a young friend that camps, but I would never go near a camp site she was using. She is a really wonderful young lady, and her friends are delightful, but they are a nightmare from hell when they camp. They just go to party all day and night. I can guaranty that no one gets any sleep. So really it's just pot luck. Just enjoy your camping, and don't worry about the others.

Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.

My first independent camp was when I was sixteen and camping with my bro. and his then fiancee and some other pals. We were pretty well-behaved, but this was in the sixties, so it would have been unusual not to be. I don't recall drinking on site at all, though we did have a camp fire at night and played guitars and sang until the early hours. Nobody seemed troubled, as others were sitting round their fires chatting and laughing as well, even the children.

The only time I encountered really unpleasant ageism was in 1974, when I was with OH on our first holiday together. We'd gone to a really nice nature reserve in Anglesey and were having a respectable, fully-clothed and non-tactile picnic by a reservoir, and the warden, a miserable old guy with a scowl fit to shrivel any living thing, came huffing down from the visitor's centre and ordered us to leave. "I don't mind families," he told us, "but I won't have courting couples on the site. They take liberties and give the place a bad name..." I wondered just what these courting couples must have been up to... Did they put too much mustard on their sandwiches, or was it an issue of wearing red and making the bulls anxious??? It was truly weird, and even now, forty years on, I don't really understand where he was coming from. What on earth did he think we were going to do in full view of the visitors' centre and a dozen or so other tourists? Stupid man!

I work with young people and, yes, they can be challenging and have their own ways, but good grief they're not an alien species! My kids are young adults and they're not ravers. They enjoy their peace and quiet just like anyone else!

Just enjoy your camping, KellyP, and don't let these rude folks put you off!

I can sympathise with KellyP. My husband and I have been camping together since we were in our teens (longer ago than I care to work out ), and we STILL get sideways glances from some people when we arrive, as we're 'Alternative' types, who wear black and have long hair.

We're used to it now, though, and I love nothing more than pitching our tent, fixing a jug of Pimm's, or opening a bottle of wine so we can sit down with a book - and NOT being rowdy, sweary or anti-social.

All you can do in a situation like that is smile, be polite and hope you leave people with a changed opinion and less likely to judge in future.

Welcome!

We were about 18 when we first went camping on our own. Mostly wild camping tbh.

Last year our son and his mate (both then 19) arrived at the campsite a couple of hours before us, parked up on the pitch and just waited. They have hoodies and baseball caps. They apparently got chatting to the bloke on the next pitch (early 40's, small kids). What he said to me after was that when he'd seen them alarm bells started ringing, but when he started chatting he realised what nice lads they were. They're hoodies I suppose, but it's just fashion.

What people are afraid of is the loud music, staying up all night talking loudly, getting drunk etc. But people of any age can do that (and some do!). If you're as nice as you sound you'll be welcome anywhere.

Me and my H have been together since our teens and we are now 37 and 41. We have been camping since toddlers with our families and continued this with the purchase of OUR first tent when we first met, since then we have camped every year with only 1 year out when I had our daughter.
We used to have terrible trouble trying to book into campsites when we were in our early twenties, as we went with other couples ie all adult young group, the campsites always assumed we would be loud/noisy etc. Don't get me wrong, we know how to have a good time but we also respect others. As many of you have already said, quite often the neighbouring tents would join us round our fire for a great chat and a toast to the camping experience.
Now our daughter has been camping with us, I hope that she will continue to camp when she gets older as there's nothing quite like it.
I love talking to the fellow campers and the freedom for kids is a wonderful feeling.
Some of my other friends think we are completely mad and can't understand why we don't book into the nearest travel lodge, I say they haven't lived!
