I started solo camping at eighteen, but have camped all my life. I am now an oldie, and have had concerns about being among young campers. With one exception, these have all been proved wrong, and I would gladly camp with the young ones we have met. I do have a young friend that camps, but I would never go near a camp site she was using. She is a really wonderful young lady, and her friends are delightful, but they are a nightmare from hell when they camp. They just go to party all day and night. I can guaranty that no one gets any sleep. So really it's just pot luck. Just enjoy your camping, and don't worry about the others.
------------- Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.

My first independent camp was when I was sixteen and camping with my bro. and his then fiancee and some other pals. We were pretty well-behaved, but this was in the sixties, so it would have been unusual not to be. I don't recall drinking on site at all, though we did have a camp fire at night and played guitars and sang until the early hours. Nobody seemed troubled, as others were sitting round their fires chatting and laughing as well, even the children.
The only time I encountered really unpleasant ageism was in 1974, when I was with OH on our first holiday together. We'd gone to a really nice nature reserve in Anglesey and were having a respectable, fully-clothed and non-tactile picnic by a reservoir, and the warden, a miserable old guy with a scowl fit to shrivel any living thing, came huffing down from the visitor's centre and ordered us to leave. "I don't mind families," he told us, "but I won't have courting couples on the site. They take liberties and give the place a bad name..." I wondered just what these courting couples must have been up to... Did they put too much mustard on their sandwiches, or was it an issue of wearing red and making the bulls anxious??? It was truly weird, and even now, forty years on, I don't really understand where he was coming from. What on earth did he think we were going to do in full view of the visitors' centre and a dozen or so other tourists? Stupid man!
I work with young people and, yes, they can be challenging and have their own ways, but good grief they're not an alien species! My kids are young adults and they're not ravers. They enjoy their peace and quiet just like anyone else!
Just enjoy your camping, KellyP, and don't let these rude folks put you off!

Me and my H have been together since our teens and we are now 37 and 41. We have been camping since toddlers with our families and continued this with the purchase of OUR first tent when we first met, since then we have camped every year with only 1 year out when I had our daughter.
We used to have terrible trouble trying to book into campsites when we were in our early twenties, as we went with other couples ie all adult young group, the campsites always assumed we would be loud/noisy etc. Don't get me wrong, we know how to have a good time but we also respect others. As many of you have already said, quite often the neighbouring tents would join us round our fire for a great chat and a toast to the camping experience.
Now our daughter has been camping with us, I hope that she will continue to camp when she gets older as there's nothing quite like it.
I love talking to the fellow campers and the freedom for kids is a wonderful feeling.
Some of my other friends think we are completely mad and can't understand why we don't book into the nearest travel lodge, I say they haven't lived!
