Forgive me for being really thick, but how do you attach the flag pole to the tent?

you normally get a ground spike or even 2 when you buy the poles
there are many places to buy from but if you look here at the poles many come with the ground spikes :p

Well, I've taken the plunge and ordered a 5m pole, spikes, flag and windsock from skyblue this morning

April- rosetta 3 nights
May - walled garden 3 nights
June- ??
July- monkey tree 14 nights
