Your tent bag is about the same size as your tent poles so fold your tent into sections the same size as your poles, then put your poles on top and roil up as tied as you can leaving you a roiled up tent with the pools in the middle but no wider then the pools and them put in bag

Not if your poles come in their own, equally large and weighty bag!!

When I take out a new tent from it's bag, I note carefully how to unfold it. Then when I leave I just do it all in reverse. I always put the poles and pegs at the door end so when I unpack next time I know where the door will be. I may be a bit sad.

Thanks everyone, I really enjoyed this thread, I learned that not only is my folding method correct, but that I shouldn't eat beans with cabbage.
By the by - I lost my "discussion" with herself, my tent is currently folded wrong

The battle maybe lost but the war has still to be one. I'm right behind you (unless your wonderful wife is quick, agile and has a terrific left hook).

Right plan of action, I set up a new post stating that a "pin" from the ring and pin system has put a hole in my fly sheet. This has obviously been caused by the way I rolled the tent up. I've been quoted £50 for the repair and the retail outlet has recommended that when I pack the tent away, all the ring and pins are on one side...

Show this post to your wife as an interesting thread. With any luck she will come up with the idea that you need to change the way the tent is packed down. She thinks it's her idea but we know different...

What do you reckon?

Yes we did that, but have always struggled to get our beast back in its bag. Hence the folding experimentation. The bag was snug before the tent was taken out of it the first time, and you can never get them folded as well as the factory did.

Test pitched my new Monty last weekend with the help of several ukcs members...For days before it I was reminding myself...."Take note of how its folded as it comes out of the bag" So you can fold it the same way when packing up...Something I have done with all my tents

Now...I get to the site...Sunshine and showers as we start to pitch(Had to retire to shelter one or two times)..5 people helping so folk all over the place doing this job and that job...Got it up and all the tables/bed/cooker etc in in jig time But forgot to take note of how it was folded..****^^!!!

Result is the picture you can see in the Comrie Croft thread on here....Where we were rolling around like dafties...Thing is it went back in the bag with room to spare....

Going to be interesting putting it up by myself in Aug (its next outing) as I have no idea which way the door is facing....

Normally...Two edges into the centre...Fold again...Check it against the bag.. fold again(if needed) and roll towards the open front door...You then know where the door is when putting it up next time...And can put it on top of the footprint right way round 1st time...

Jelboy.

two edges to the center is the old canvas folding way....
if you have R & P and Windows then it needs rethinking...
as said fold in half with all pins to one side then sort out the width to fit the bag.. ensuring your windows are as flat and fold free as possible...

I sure do like the UK summers :) :)

Just to concur with others (for any newbies out there)...
Once you have the right width to suit the bag, always roll tightly towards the door (For those with "front" door)..... two reasons, as already stated..... it squeezes the majority of the air out of the tent, to make the pack size as small as poss, and it also means that you know exactly which way round to sit it on the front edge of your footprint, when next setting up, before unrolling it, meaning there's never any need to unroll, find the front door, then have to spin it around!!

Mr Rex this time. I always like the ring and pins along one side of the tent... Doors open to get the air out and roll towards an open door.

Same here.

As a first step, I fold bits in until it's basically a rectangle. I find that makes it easier to get it neatly folded into a long strip before rolling it up.
