A tube/roll ( at Mucker) of Tenacious tape is handy for emergency tent repair.
I have used it when the tent was up as I did not spot the tear until after I had pitched the tent.
It was letting in water as it was raining, and the Tenacious tape did not stick to the canvas. I held the Tenacious tapes down on both sides of the canvas using duct tape (another useful item in your repair kit) as temporary measure.
When the tent was eventually dried, I found the Tenacious tapes under the duct tapes firmly attached to the canvas.
I would say it is probably easier to apply Tenacious tape to repair tears in the fabrics with the tent not erected. However, it is not always possible to do so, like in my case as described.
Good luck with your first trip.

I put the TT on whilst pitched, but it was easily accessible, and on a flat area of fly sheet, rather than an area that was at a seam, or on an awkward part, such as a pole sleeve (it had been "stabbed" with a king pole spike.)
I would have thought it would be easier for yours down on the ground, but maybe with the pole through the sleeve, just to give it some shape?

The other product for tent repairs is "Tear Aid" designed for canvas repairs (type A). Having used both products (don't ask) I personally think the Tear Aid is a better product (not that my humble opinion is that significant).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STAY AWAY FROM THE OUTDOOR SHOPS!!
I went there.. A happy carefree mildly interested in my first camping trip individual.. I left having to take out a second mortgage, maxing out 3 credit cards, emptying my bank account and overdraft then started on my partners. We then had to sell the kids to keep up with my GoOutdoors buying addiction :(.
Okay, maybe it's not QUITE that bad, but not far off!! It is addictive, I keep finding excuses to go back there and buy things but 'accidentally forgetting something' so I have to go back again ;)! That wouldn't be an issue.. If it wasn't almost 20 miles away..
In all seriousness now, you will LOVE your first trip to a large camping/outdoor shop. Just try to leave your wallet in the car (or better yet, at home) so you don't spend too much.
In terms of the rip... If you're not too fussed about honesty you could try returning it and saying it was already like that? Personally I'd take the advice of the good people here though. It has never steered me wrong (Apart from my bank account suffering).
Mucker even advised me to get my roll/tube of tenacious tape and that's where it all began......
Mucker, did we decide on whether it was a tube or a roll yet?

Just a quick hello to a local (we're in Radcliffe :-))
Have you been to Winfields camping store in Haslingden? We love it there, huge tent display and everything you will ever need for camping.
Plus Castlecroft in Radcliffe, near Newbank Garden Centre is quite good too.
As far as camping questions and ideas go, this site has been a godsend, everybody is so helpful and friendly. Im quite new to it too, been a member since last year but only really started posting last couple of months.
I love it!
Happy Camping :-))
