sort of thing, its a powerpack/jumpstarter /invertor, i was wondering if it would be any use for running a laptop from and charging phones etc over a weeks camping? just wondering if any of you has nay thoughts or experience , thanks
If you state the subject of your post in the topic title you will get a few more replies, nobody likes a cryptic title where they have to delve into the post to find out what it is about.
There have been numerous posts about inverters, try using the search button at the top of the page.
We had a cheap compressor/jumpstart that worked ok for a while but eventually gave up completely after what I regard as very little use (although not charged regularly as advised) I beleive this is a common issue with these. We also still have a Clarke jumpstart which has a cig lighter socket which was bought before the compressor one and has had the same lack of charging for optimum use but still soldiers on years later (must remember to give it another charge) not used it for camping yet as normally have EHU but will be taking it on our next short break to see how it goes.
It will charge the phones ok for a week but depending on the size of the laptop battery your looking at 2 charges.
But the main problem with these modified inverters is they make some power supplies hum very badly. I do not know if this causes damage but sound awful.
Not that one specifically but I've had a couple of Halfords ones that haven't lasted very long.
I've had this one for almost a year now and it has been brilliant. It started a friends Subaru and has started my Punto Sport a few times. Always straight away. It also powered my tv and Xbox for over 3 hours when we had a power cut. Even then, I switched off myself it wasn't dead. http://www.maplin.co.uk/5-in-1-jump-starter-with-portable-power-224871?action=noagentcheck
Apologies for not coding the link but I am on my phone.

Remember its just simple physics if you have a 20A/hr battery it can supply 20A in an ideal world but introduce an inverter and this will drop due to inefficiencys.
So for example in the case above Xbox draws about 3A and a tv about 1A so that's 4 Amps total so a 20Amp/hr battery would run that for about 4 hours taking into accout loses.
A typical laptop has a draw about 5A - 8 A so including charging a phone a 20 A/hr batter will give at best 3 charges more likely 2.
Basically they are hopeless for anything but very small devices.
I have one that came from Aldi it was half the price of the Halfords one and Argos do a Challenge range too which are less expensive than this. I would not spend £100 on one as they only last a few years as it has already been mentioned. This Halford's one is not an inverter so you can only run 12v from it.
I use mine for all the air beds/sofa and to charge mobile phones and DS. We did have a small TV running from it which ran for about 3/4 hours, therefore I would not recommend a laptop running from it. I like mine as it stops us from using the car 12volt and running the battery down on the car - which has happened twice before I had a jumpstart. I have also helped a few people with jump starts too using it - majority were campers!
I have one, in fact they are made by Ring Electrical The 1st time I used the inverter it blew the internal 40A fuse (no I did not overload it) Ring did repair it free of charge but I have not attempted to use the inverter since. It also failed to start my sprinter when I had a low battery this winter & its difficult to read the pressure gauge when using the tyre inflator, you have to turn the unit on its side to read it & I do charge it monthly as required
We use the exact same Power pack as the one the OP linked to. Have had it for years and it has always come in handy. Last year the battery finally died so I opened it up and changed the battery. It's the same sort as used in golf trollies, and can be found for about £25 on ebay.
We tend not to use the inverter but the cigarette socket, and it lasts us days. We use it for the air pump (not the built in one) when we arrive, our light in the sleeping area, and to charge phones and Ipad. I have tried a laptop, and it worked fine.
However, The one in Maplin is almost identical for £40 less than the halfords one, so next time I would just go for that.
