We are travelling to France this summer and want to know if you have to be insured? Is it worth it? Seems pricey, and many have the get-out clause of us not being covered if tent is left unattended. I have a decent poly cotton tent and a fair amount of gear, but never had a problem with theft before. Just don't want to spend money on insurance if policy is a bit pants when I could spend it on French wine !Advise would be welcomed!! Thanks.

You need some kind of travel insurance that would cover any medical costs and repatriation. Some policies have cover for tents etc, though i'm sure they would all try and wangle out of a payout if it came to it. Would you take out insurance on your tent if you were camping in this country? It's the same really. Keep valuables locked in the car or on your person, keep other things tucked inside the tent is about the most you can do.

Have a look at "Shield Total Insurance" which the C&CC use, although you do not have to be a member to get a policy.

To be fair it's probably not needed but what price peace of mind.

You are probably looking at £50 for the year, and the same again for a Trailer if you have one.

In the great scheme of things it's not a lot of money, and caravan owners have a harder time of it when it comes to insurance costs, so for us campers it's a cheap option in any case.

I agree with Kate regards health insurance, for years I thought our HIC card would cover anything, we never bothered for our 3 weeks in France each year.

Now that me and Mrs Francais have turned 50 we have medical cover etc on a couples policy that costs £36 for 12 months cover.

I add the value of our camping equipment to our house insurance the day before we go and then cancel it when we return it usually don't cost more than a fiver and that covers the lot including the trailer.

Hi tentfluff.
what company is that, I would sure like to read the small print.

We are in the process of changing our buildings and contents insurance, because the Halifax only cover bikes upto £500 and you can't increase the cover by paying more.

We have a couple of high end bikes, so the current cover is not really adequate.

So it wood be good to find a firm that would also cover the Trailer and Tent/Kit.

Hi Francais the company is Pearl home insurance, when I tried to insure our camping equipment at home the only thing they wouldn't insure was our trailer because it was in the back garden. I was advised by Pearl I could phone and add the camping equipment the night before we leave and when we returned cancelled it we would only be charged for the time used, have done it twice now and each time there has been no problem. They charge me around £90. for the year for it, but as we cancel it the charge is less than a fiver.

Tentfluff it might be worth double checking the wording of the policy as you may find the tent is not covered if you are away from the tent or leave it unoccupied (eg on a day out). The other consideration if you do make a claim this could affect the premium of your home insurance...

You mention that you have had no problem. Has this involved making any claims or them just taking the additional premiums and payment..?

Hi all
I have just come off the phone to my insurance company and I don't believe what they are telling me.
If we were to have a crash on the motorway and the car burst into flames then yes the tent is covered, also if when we arrive at the campsite if we were to get all our camping equipment out and before putting it all up went and had fish & chips and when we returned someone had stole it then it would be covered. As soon as we start to use it for the purpose it was intended then it's not covered. So like that all those people out there who have expensive bikes, cameras and jewels once you use
them they are not covered. I won't bother insuring our camp stuff anymore. just need to check with my car insurance company to see if the trailer is covered when it is attached to the car.

So Glamper J     don't bother with insurance you are just paying someone else for going on holiday, just make friends with the other campers around you and ask them to as you would do keep and eye on your stuff when you go out for the day. just hope none of them work in the insurance industry.

tentfluff at least you confirmed this before the worst happened and you needed to make a claim and then find out your not actually covered.

As mentioned, Sheild Insurance do specific camping insurance which is designed for tents etc. Again check the policy document to satisfy yourself that the level of cover is adequate for the premium charged. The Campming and Caravan Club provide insurance via Shield although I believe it is cheaper to go direct? This allows non members to get cover if they want to.

I've never used them and have no idea what the claims process is like. Others on UK Campsite may have this experience...?

Sheild Insurance

I would always arrange travel insurance as you never know what may happen. For a small cost you can get very good cover (unless you have an underlying medical condition or are within a certain age group). As an example if you were involved in an accident and needed repatriation back to the UK via special flights the costs would be extremely high.
