Hope OP was ok, we had to pack up on Thursday as the 45mph winds were battering us, tent stood up well but the wind blew the side onto a table and it put a hole in tent, our fault. Took six people to hold the tent down to get it down, a very scary night indeed.
Been to Ullswater over the weekend, the gusts Friday night/early sat morning were some of the worst we have experienced whilst camping.
Was up at 2am in bare feet hammering tent pegs back in the ground. 2 tents nearby packed up and went home. Worst thing was, you could hear the gusts approaching up the valley, then just waiting for them to hit. The tent stood up to it ok though and predictably the kids were oblivious to it all in the morning !
The forecast is looking much brighter for later in the week, hope you see some sunshine to make up for it.
Like many posters, I have also held my tent down at 2am in gusty winds in North Wales last summer. The children slept through the whole thing but I was millimetres from binning the tent and booking into a B&B. Delta pegs are worth their weight in gold!
Were home now, just suffered the 7.5 hour drive back via M5 and M6. Tent stood up great but had to pack up this morning sharpish and it was still wet. We have had all four seasons of weather this week but non the less a great time was had in South Devon.
We had a terrible night year before last, I was crying it was that scary! It was persisting it down and small trees on the fields were bending over! I was stood in the middle on the tent repeating over and over it would blow in - whilst my Fiance was trying to keep me calm saying it would be fine - it was, despite bad reviews on the Vango Orchy 500 in wind, it had been absolutely fine! :)
Worst we had was Mablethorpe C&CC in August 2010. Wind was horrendous. We were in a Vango Tigris 400 DLX. We had to pile all our kit in the middle as the sides were blowing in that much. Best advice try to sleep through it you'll be surprised how much battering it can take.
